4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping,powerful read., 19 April 2001
By A Customer
This is a powerful and gripping novel. It deals wth many different genre, but the main story revolves around the subject of war and it's consequences. The main character, Rick Weston, is shoved unknowingly into a world of secrets, mysteries and danger. He meets many new people, and each of them play a major part in his life, whether good or bad. It also refers to many famous events in British history, which makes it feel even more real. There are many twists and surprises, and by the end of the book you really feel emotion for the main characters. When Rick is moving on with the resistance at the end, and leaving behind "that special someone" it hits you hard and makes you think of all the ral sacrifices real people made for the war effort. The closing line, is, I think, is a wonderful finish, as it leaves you in suspence, but also with a slight feeling of contentment. All in all, this is a powerful, must-read novel. Well done Geoffrey Trease!
