Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This Big Book edition is perfect for sharing with groups of young children.

Winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Smarties Prize for Children's Books, this luscious- as-chocolate tale of the little bear who just can't go to sleep should find a place on every pre-school bookshelf.

While Big Bear tries to read his Bear Book, Little Bear tries to sleep, but can't. He's scared of the dark. So Big Bear keeps bringing him progressively bigger lanterns. But nothing seems to work, until he leads Little Bear out of the Bear Cave into the dark nights.

NB. There is some debate as to whether Little Bear was really trying very hard to get to sleep. Some of the illustrations seem to show him bouncing around rather a lot. You decide. (Ages 2 to 5)--Lisa Gee

A regular size edition is also available.

Product Description

Little Bear can't sleep. He is frightened of the dark, even with the biggest lantern of them all at his bedside. But Big Bear finds an ingenious way to reassure him. So Big Bear takes him out and shows him the moon and the stars - and Little Bear then falls asleep.

5.0 out of 5 stars The over-sevens are quite partial, as well., 20 Jul 2000
By A Customer
When my best friend and I - she a 22-year old woman, me a 28 year old man, and both of us cynical newspaper journalists - moved into a flat we shared for a while in 1995, we found a large format copy of this under a sofa. It was probably left by a previous tenant. Not known for sentimentality, we nevertheless decided it was one of the finest works of literature we had ever come across, and it was known simply as THE BEAR BOOK from then on.

The Proust went out of the window, the Tolstoy was used to prop the leg of a wonky table, and we set about learning THE BEAR BOOK by heart.

Nobody was permitted to enter the flat without sitting down and reading THE BEAR BOOK.

No day was permitted to pass without quoting passages of THE BEAR BOOK to one another.

No dinner table conversation concerning matters of abstract and knotty philosophy was permitted to end without reference to THE BEAR BOOK.

As classics involving matters ursine go, THE BEAR BOOK deserves to be regarded alongside the best of AA Milne.

Buy THE BEAR BOOK.

Who knows, your children might like it, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a briliant story book for under sevens., 15 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I liked the book because the characters were kind and the story was enjoyable. I liked the bit where little bear did somersaults on his bed because it was funny. The theme is about not to be scared of the dark. The setting is in a cave and outside the cave in a forest.

5.0 out of 5 stars And it was DARK...!, 25 Nov 2008
I love this book to tiny little pieces. They're tiny.
I lived apart from my boyfriend at uni and he'd call to read me parts of the book late at night. I knew every word off by heart and still do.

There are some heart-warming moments and some funny ones - notably Little Bear's caustic 'not MUCH bigger!'when proffered a slightly larger lamp. Listen out for it.

Thanks T.

I used to read this to my son, years ago. Came across it again recently and it STILL brings a lump to my throat. Read more
