This is the illustrated story of the little bear Bartholomew learning the importance of eating his dinner from his friend George. Bartholomew will not sit down and eat his dinner. Gearge sits down to eat his dinner as Bartholomew watches. When he finishes his dinner he brings in a delicious honey cake with pink icing. He eats a slice and then takes the cake away again. Bartholomew thinks about this and then sits down and eats his dinner, after which George gives him a slice of cake. This is one of a series of books on toddler life featuring George and Bartholomew. The others are "On Your Potty!" and "Get Into Bed!". Virginia Miller has also written "Squeak-A-Lot" (runner-up for the 1991 Mother Goose Award) and "Sailor Bear".

George, the father figure, is drawn with an excellent range of expressions with which a parent can relate as the little bear refuses to eat his dinner. You can see the thought processes going through Bartholomew's head in the drawings, as he decides he would like the reward of cake for eating up his dinner. I just wish my little boy would follow his example and I aim to keep as calm as George in future! A really charming book which is easy for children to join along with and believe they are reading themselves.

This is one of those books that I kind of like, but my daughter LOVES. She regularly wakes up saying "eat your dinner" and points to the book. We're online to buy another in the set. My daughter is 2 years and 3 months at the moment, by the way.
