The Official Strategy Guide for Hordes of the Underdark by Michael Lummis for Brady Games is value for money. You get a colourful paperback with 224 pages crammed with painstaking detail.
The walkthru' part begins on page 110 to the last page. This isn't the best part of the book. The pages up to the walkthru' cover in great detail about the things you really need to know to successfully play this type of D&D Adventure game.
All the core classes, prestige classes and dual classes with some nice templates for character creation are suggested here.
There is a comprehensive list of all spells and what they do.
You could spend ages on forums trying to find out less worthwhile information when this book has it all. Well not quite all. I do not know if there are omissions from the book by design or accident but this doesn't matter.
You don't get to know every single detail of the game in the walkthru'. Everything important is there but the rest is for the gamer to explore using the illustrated maps provided in the book. The book will not spoil anything for you and indeed, the ending is not given to the reader.
For those diehards who play HotU and are having some difficulty with the game, you need look no further than this book. I am not a novice to D&D games, but I did find playing HotU downright impossible at first. Using this book made what was a frustrating experience into a pleasureable one. And when you have finished the game you can play it again and again because the book doesn't give away solutions that you'd be happier finding out for yourself. The book is, after all, a guide to gameplay, not a lexicon of answers to every eventuality.
You will find that having used this book you will learn much about D&D game playing without getting into 3rd Edition Hardcore rules. There are no hard and fast stuffy rules in this book, but it is full of hints, tips, (no cheats).
A nice touch with puzzle solving is that the author will provide the quick answer for you, but this is tucked away at the end of the text. Prior to the solution, you are given a description of what possible things you can do and thereafter attempt to find the solution for yourself. So you can still get much satisfaction from problem solving yourself and if you are really stuck and just want to get on, then the answer is usually provided for you.
There is a large part of the gameplay missing from the book. I don't know if this was on purpose, but it does come about half-way thru' the game and I found this to be the best part because there was no help available. You see, because I had used the book's information up to this point, I was confidently able to undertake adventuring on my own, having had previous insight into the gameplay. That's what this book does best. It gives you more time to enjoy playing successfully and less time banging your head off the wall in frustration.
One crit though. There is no list of items of things to be found in the game itself. This omission is glaring because the same author and publisher provided this information in their previous walkthru' for Shadows of Undrentide.
That said, I do recommend this book without reservation and give it 4 stars out of 5. I am withholding one star because the item information was not included in this book.
