Product Description

Review
Trigiani revisits the sleepy Virginia hamlet of Big Stone Gap.The author of the Big Stone Gap trilogy (Milk Glass Moon, 2002, etc.) rejoins her small-town characters as Ave Marie and her husband, Jack MacChesney, head home after attending the wedding of their daughter Etta in Italy. The story focuses on Ave Marie as she tackles the ennui of being an empty-nester. Upon her return, Ave Maria resumes her work at the pharmacy and catches up with friends, but she feels a void and soon volunteers to direct the local musical production. There's plenty of drama waiting for Ave Maria outside the theater doors. First, Jack is stricken with an illness that threatens to widow Ave Maria, and then, Ave Maria has a falling out with her best pal, Iva Lou, over a mysterious stranger who pops up on Thanksgiving Day. Throughout, this can all be a drag: Ave Maria is self-absorbed. The world seems to revolve around her whims and worries. It's a wonder how she has so many men swooning over her. Her meddling can be a source of amusement, but her stubbornness is grating. When it comes to these characters, Trigiani lets no thought go unmentioned and no inane detail missed. The glorious setting and the disarmingly frank supporting characters save this work from being nothing but mediocre dross.Cloyingly sweet tale about life and loss in a small country town. (Kirkus Reviews)

Product Description
Seismic changes are about to take place in Ave Maria's life. Her daughter, Etta, barely eighteen, is married and living in Italy; the health of her husband, the gorgeous and ever-dependable Jack Mac, is failing and she has scarcely noticed; friendships she has enjoyed forever are under threat. And then to town comes a mysterious stranger, revealing a long-buried secret. Her world shaken, Ave Maria must face up to the past in order to build a new life for herself and for Jack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never disappoints!, 18 Mar 2007
By Belladonna (East Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
Adriana Trigiani never disappoints. If you thought the Big Stone Gap trilogy was done, you were wrong! This is the fourth in the series of the life and times of Ave Maria Mulligan MacChesney and she just gets better and better. I was glued to the book from the start, because as ever, A.T. makes her characters so utterly believable that you really care what happens to them. This installment takes them through further trials and tribulations that make you feel you are with them, cheering on from the sidelines, willing them to succeed, and at the same time realising that you are learning something about yourself and your own relationships. I hope she writes another, as there is definitely room for more!

3.0 out of 5 stars Trigiani resorts to 'what if?', 1 Jan 2007
By Roz "wordsmith" (Manchester) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Home to Big Stone Gap (Paperback)
Whilst it was lovely to revisit Big Stone Gap this book seemed empty of the intriguing family atmosphere which Trigiani normally paints so well. It is chock-full of coincidences and predictable 'dilemmas', and the characters seem to have acquired a woodenness not present in her earlier books.
I know the author's career has taken flight and it is obvious from this book that she has other things on the horizon and the publishers were urging her to put another book out. She must have sat down and thought 'well, what if this happened, then happened again, then happened again?' It is too sugary sweet and needs some flawed characters to bring everyone back down to earth - and to life!
A good example of how making your characters too nice produces dreary and predictable reading. Buy it if you want a sugary sweet indulgent read - don't buy it if you want to learn anything new about the characters you already know and love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing end to a great story., 9 April 2007
By C. Mclaughlin - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I loved the previous three books in this series but I thought this one was let down by the rubbish written about Scotland- where quite a chunk of the action in this book takes place. Castles in Glasgow? All farming is organic? Ordinary houses with basements? Snowdrops and roses at the same time?
