Product Description

Product Description
Filled with her characteristic bend of humour and pathos, Catherine Barry introduces us to Finn, a young woman struggling to come to terms with growing up and her need to feel more feminine. Finn has felt unhappy with her chest size since she was a girl and decides that her failed relationships, dysfunctional childhood and poor job prospects can all be put down to the fact that her image is lacking. Everywhere she turns thin, large breasted, beautiful women assault her. She is convinced that with bigger breasts she will finally be happy, she will finally be a 'real woman'. Indeed, post-operative Finn's life changes dramatically, but is it all she imagines?

From the Inside Flap
'Skin Deep cuts through the world's outer shell to reveal real, flawed people you care about' author Cathy Kelly. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, 30 Mar 2005
I bought this book along with a couple of others in Dublin airport on my way to holiday in Orlando, Flordia (thats Universal and Disneyland to those who don't know). Ok - big mistake as there was precious little time to read. However I did start reading this book on the endless flight over and once started had to finish it. It was a welcome relief from the assault of the senses (mainly ears - its very noisy) which is Orlando. I found it extremely funny - fortunately nobody noticed me bursting out laughing as they were too busy screaming on some rollercoaster or other. Really insightful of the way we women think. I could relate in a big way to the main character as I think most people will. I won't spoil it by saying any more. Excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roddy Doyle in a skirt!!!!, 18 April 2005
By A Customer
When you first start reading this book you'll think it's about a girl with the usual hang-ups about weight problems and men. But it won't take you long to realise that it's much more than this. Our heroine, Finn, is a much deeper character than we are initally led to believe. When we first meet her, she seems crass, a little shy and very insecure but this is a front that hides a troubled person with a troubled background. Barry illustrates beautifully a woman's obsession with her looks and how she uses food as a crutch. The book is written in Barry's usual forthright style and the language is warm and refreshing But just when you think you have Ms Barry pidgeon-holed, her writing becomes fluid and poetic as she draws us deeper into Finn's head. A winning novel from a talented, wonderful author. I can't wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant. brilliant.brilliant., 8 Mar 2005

Extremely funny. I mean hilarious. The dialogue sharp as a knife. The charachters are genuine, people you meet every day. Poeple you can relate to. The love storyline is wonderful. But by far The best writing is in the last few chapters where Catherine's point really hits home. It's simply beautiful and will make you cry. Writing does not get any better than those last few chapters. This is Catherine Barry at her very very best. Witty, poignant, emotional. This book I hope will put Catherine firmly on the top of the publishing world, where she so dearly deserves to be. I have no doubts it will be the bestseller of the year. Well done Cath, we are so proud of you.
