An excellent read., 23 Feb 2004
This is an excellently written book with spot on characterisation, I read it in record time as I couldn't put it down. The story is set in the later half of season 4, but pre-Jasmine. Cordy has recently returned to live in the hotel and Wes is still on the outside. There are several plot threads that all end up combining towards the end; Angel and Gunn are undercover at a gathering of sorcerors and mages, trying to find and defeat a being that has broken through the dimensional walls. They spend most of the book isolated from the gang, which gives us plenty of insight into their relationship, and just how Gunn feels about Angel. Fred is alone for almost the entire story, getting into, and out of trouble by herself. She is upset at the shooting of an old friend and takes it upon herself to investigate the incident, with an interesting twist at the end. Of course, Lilah is involved, and not in a good way. She is also involved in Wesley's story. They spend a bit of time together at the beginning of the story, but Wes is soon on his way to help Fred, much to Lilah's annoyance. For the majority of the story after that, Wes is mostly fighting demons that are appearing through the holes between dimensions, and is joined by Connor on and off. The only down side to the book is that there isn't much of Lorne or Cordelia, they crop up occassionally in dialogue scenes at the hotel, but they don't leave there and are reduced to the odd phone call. Still, over all, I was very happy with the book. It kept my attention and was well structured so that the plot twists were well hidden until sprung. I'd definitely recommend it to any Angel fan.
