Product Description

Product Description

Few television programmes have made such an impact on the public consciousness as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which has hooked a dedicated band of viewers of both sexes and all ages, and whose heroine has become a cultural icon for our times. In January 2003 in a poll of the Top 100 SF and Fantasy characters of all time, the vampire Spike was voted No. 2 and Buffy No. 3 by the readers of SFX, the world's largest-circulation science fiction magazine. Here is the long-awaited companion to the final three seasons of the show, with the same sassy mix of detail and insight that has led volumes one and two of the Watcher's Guide to be hailed as the best of their kind. The third volume includes full episode guides to seasons 5, 6 and 7 -- thirty-three episodes in all, including the highly-acclaimed 'The Body', the legendary musical episode 'Once More With Feeling' and the sensational series conclusion -- plus comment on the show and its place in television history from a host of contributors, cast and crew. This is a book that no Buffy fan can afford to be without.

2.0 out of 5 stars Delayed for a year, yet completely lacking., 15 Jun 2004
By A Customer
The first two volumes of The Watcher's Guide contained episode guides that weren't very large or complete, but the books more than made up for it with their detailed behind-the-scenes segments. Being the "official" guides, they had exclusive access to the cast and crew, with exclusive interviews and descriptions of how episodes are made. Volume 3 has been a long time coming, and is almost totally a disappointment. The writers of the first two volumes are gone, and Paul Ruditis has sole credit for this one. The book is totally lacking in behind-the-scenes information, as though Ruditis was denied the exclusive access that this "Official companion" is supposed to have.

The Episode Guide section (which covers seasons 5 to 7) covers each episode with the same detail as previous volumes, which is enough for a casual reader but not really informative. It lacks the behind-the-scenes trivia boxes that were peppered around the previous guides, and it criminally fails to include the listing of music tracks. In place of the huge behind-the-scenes sections from previous Volumes, we now get some amateurish essays instead. A big chunk of the book is padded out with the shooting script for "Restless", a season 4 episode that shouldn't even be covered by this guide. This book is padded out with unnecessary pages, or even blank pages, yet it still doesn't reach the same page count as Volume 2.

As a glossy casual book to be occasionally dipped into, the Watcher's Guide Volume 3 suffices. Its summaries of the episodes in seasons 5 to 7 will jog the memories of casual fans, and it has a lot of pictures. But for serious Buffy fans who expected exclusive and official insight into the show, this is a wasted opportunity and a disappointment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As It Should Have Been, 10 Jul 2004
Considering the length of time this book was held back by due to Season 7 being the last season you would think that the book had some in depth coverage of season 7 but it doesn't. It completely lacks the cast and crew insight that made the other two volumes essential reading for Buffy fans. It seems as though the book was rushed together at he last minute with disappointing essays that don't make up for the lack of interviewing. The whole point of buying the official versions is so that you get a feel of what it's like to work on the show and what the cast and crew felt about things and with this being the last one I thought it would have been amazing with loads of behind the scenes stuff for the last season especially. The breakdown of Restless is quite good but the author makes points about hings that were insignificant and, by Joss's own admition, completely accidental and not meant to be read into in that much depth. There are several areas in the breakdown where the author contradicts things that joss himself has said on the DVD release of Season 4. All in all the book would be good for people who were new to the show and wanted to see what they'd missed and the breakdown does mention any continuity links with other seasons which would be helpful to new viewers but not seasoned Buffy fans who already know this.

Lets hope the next installment of Angel's Casefiles is better - it's got the same author but with Diana Gallagher too so hopefully she will have thought to do some interviews and improve the quality of the book!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Take 3, 17 Jun 2004
By Ben Singer (Cardiff, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This book seems to have been a long time coming, so was it worth the wait?

This book is divided into two parts which is the 'episode guide' (Season 5-7) and 'the essays'. You'll be familiar with the 'episode guide' which follows the same format as the preceding volumes; 'the essays' is basically various writers talking about various aspects of the show like 'Buffy in Britain', 'Why I like Buffy', 'the character of Dawn' etc. There is also a script of 'Restless' with indepth annotations which was quite a nice addition. There is also an approximate 32 page colour insert (in two halves) like the previous editions. Some really nice behind the scenes shots in this.

I was quite pleased with this book and am glad I bought it, but there are a few things lacking which I would have liked. Most noticeably for me was the breakdown of all the songs featured in each season, which seems to be missing in this volume unfortunetely. There also seems to be no interviews with stars of the show like there was in the other volumes.

Generally if you have the other volumes of the watcher's guide and enjoyed them, you need to have this one. Just note that with three seasons' worth the focus in this volume is mainly the episode guides.
