Product Description

Product Description

One good turn deserves another and those unpredictable amazons are back, swords sharpened, chainmail polished, and makeup in place, ready to fight the good fight on the field of battle (and also on the bookstore shelves). And if you think they're just male wish-fulfilment fantasies, you'd better say it under your breath and out of their ear shot, because these barbarian babes were born to to battle. All new adventures of fearless women warriors by Eric Flint, author of 1632; Nebula-winning author Harry Turtledove; Jody Lynn Nye, co-author of the best-selling The Ship Who Won; Campbell Award-winner Wen Spencer; and many more, including the inimitable Esther Friesner herself, as fantasy adventure takes a turn for the lighter side.

4.0 out of 5 stars more chicks in more chainmail, 11 Mar 2008
By Paul Tapner (poole dorset england) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Fifth in a series of anthologies of fantasy stories that aim to subvert the usual cliche of scantily clad weakling ladies by making the main characters tough women. all are quite light hearted tales. this volume contains over twenty stories, ranging in length from nine to twenty five pages. all follow the aforementioned pattern, and all are quite original, so you never know what you're going to get from each.

In an anthology you can usually guarantee you'll find something that'll appeal, and if you don't like a story then you hope the next will be better. That's certainly the case here. the vast majority of them I found very enjoyable. a few were a bit lacklustre, and a couple failed to grab me. But the hit rate of stories is very good, so I won't name names. There's more than enough entertaining stuff in here to make it worthwhile.

Although I will mention the best story: 'a young girl's guide to defeating the dark lord.' a hugely entertaining story of a kidnapped princess taking charge of her situation. a really entertaining read, and the crowning jewel in a good collection
