Having recently read 'Lord Of Light' in the SF Masterworks series I was interested and intrigued to discover this collection of Zelazny's short fiction. These stories run the gamut from the surreal to the well written action piece, and Zelazny's razor sharp yet poetic prose never fails to impress. His imagination is prolific, his visions are described in detail, and his characters have an off-hand, breezy realism and inherent cynicism which both engages and lends an easy acceptance and inroad into strange new worlds and circumstances. Inevitabley certain stories are more lucid and impressive than others, yet taken as a whole this is a virtuoso performance by a past master. Comparable to Jack Vances 'Fantasms and magic', it is an unforgettable glimpse into a future that could, should and might yet be.
