Product Description

Product Description

Mrs McTats and her cat Abner adopt a whole new family of cats as they work their way through the alphabet in rhyme. Mrs McTats and her cat, Abner, are living happily together when two new cats come scratching at Mrs McTats's door. By twos and threes, and then fours and more, the cats come, welcomed by Mrs McTats (although Abner's not so sure about it all). Just when it seems the house is full to bursting, the cats stop coming. But Mrs McTats can't help feeling that something - or someone - is missing. Then there's one more scratch at the door - and Mrs McTats finds just what the family needs to be complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, funny, but who is it for ... ?, 25 Nov 2007

I enjoy this book. I like cats. The batty old cat woman in the story is endearing and humorous. The poetry is upbeat and quirky. There are reasonable subtleties to the progression through the alphabet when Mrs McTats names each of the new cats who come to live with her. The illustrations are interesting with lots of unusual details such as the subjects of a portrait on the wall looking increasingly aghast page by page as more cats enter.

I'm not entirely sure who the book is pitched at. Due to the simplicity of the language I bought it for my son when he was 3 years old. He seemed to enjoy it, but it wasn't his favourite book by far. A child of reading age may begin to enjoy the alphabet references, but perhaps the story and language may be too simple for them then.

Either this book will grow with my son or he will tire of it, having never been passionate about it. I give it four stars and a reasonable recommendation simply because I enjoyed it and it is a little out of the ordinary.

5.0 out of 5 stars You would never know this is an alphabet book until the end, 18 May 2007

This is a great tale and the kids really enjoy the arrival of each new cat. They are so cunningly drawn and the rhythm of the story runs at such a good pace, you (even the reader) never feel you are making yet another run through the alphabet. Do enjoy this book, it brings A to Z to life!
