Product Description

A prophecy leads Jake Sisko on a desperate search for his missing father. Instead, what he finds at his journey's end is totally unexpected...In the climactic closing episode of the final season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Captain Benjamin Sisko, his destiny inextricably linked to that of the alien entities known as The Prophets, was last seen plunging into the depths of the Bajoran Fire Caves, locked in combat with Gul Dukat. Although he appeared to his new wife Kasady Yates and promised her that he would one day return, his son Jake has not seen him since. In Deep Space Nine: Avatar, a mysterious prophecy sent Jake on an impossible quest to trace his missing father. However, instead of finding his heart's desire, Jake is thrown across the galaxy and saved by the unexpected intervention of a strange ship with an even stranger crew. Sharing their travels and their dangers, he learns important lessons about dealing with his father's loss, and about the truth of the prophecy that sent him here. In the process, he discovers much more than he anticipated; a revelation that will change the world forever for Jake, for Bajor and for Deep Space Nine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent continuation of the series, 21 Feb 2003
If you've read the Avatar and Mission Gamma books of DS9, you'll have to read this too. And even if you've haven't, after reading this book you'll want to read the others. This book covers the story of Jake who, after finding an ancient prophecy at B'hala, went searching for his father and ended up missing (this happens in the Avatar books, he was finaly found by the crew of the Defiant in the Mission Gamma Books).
Rising Son tells us what happend to Jake during this time. He was rescued by the crew of The Even Odds, a group of fortune hunters, who are flying across their sector looking for salvage oppertunities. The characters of Even's crew, who include familiar (Cardassian, Ferengi, Wadi, Tosk) and new incredible aliens are expertly written. The hodgepodge crew reminded me a bit of the Thinktank (from a ST:Voyager episode) but are very likeable. You'll love them all, especially Pif an alien K9 species who ads a comedic touch. In his time with them Jake really grows up and becomes torn in his desire to stay with his new friends, and his wish to go home. Jake also meets Kai Opaka (I'm sure I'm not giving anything spoilers away, since she's on the frontcover). And her involvement promisses more exciting books in the future. S.D. Perry combines matters of the hart, the difficulty of growing up, loss and religion, together with an exciting adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rising Son, 20 April 2003
By A Customer
Rising Son isn't a typical DS9 story in that it doesn't feature DS9 at all! However don't let put you off as it is a fascinating story featuring what seems like a simple Bajoran prophecy, but actually turns into an amazing journey through the Gamma quadrant that truly shows the power of the Prophets. Jake Sisko is a remarkably deep lead character, his own personal story being excellently written. An essential read for any DS9 fan, especially if they've read the two Avatar books.

4.0 out of 5 stars DS9 relaunch continues to please, 6 Mar 2003
By Mr. N. Shaikh - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have thoroughly enjoyed the ds9 novels started with Avatar as a literary season 8, and SD Perry continues to excel. She has great skill at capturing the nuances of the politics and characters of ds9 which i found many other DS9 novels (pre relaunch) failed to do.
This book is set entirely in unknown Gamma Quadrant space, and ties in the Bajoran Prophets and their prophecy with Jake Sisko's search. Initially he is looking for his father Ben Sisko but his journy becomes one of self exploration and maturity. He finally learns to stand on his own two feet and cope with the loss of his father.
The ship which rescues him is excellent, and so is the crew. They are a brilliant, eclectic mix of oddball characters with great personalities, even if they aren't ethically perfect. Perry has obviously spent a lot of time on this. The captain's attempt to become a father figure for jake was interesting. Jake's irritation at being used by the Prophets for their own ends was very real.
The climax was a bit odd, i'm wondering how this will tie into DS9's future and if we will see this new alien race in Unity. Cannot wait for the next installment.
