4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read., 26 Jan 2005
THE STORY:
Two Imperial soldiers, Karl and Gerlach, survive the destruction of their army but are separated by circumstance. Karl is captured by the obscene forces of Chaos, whilst Gerlach finds himself in the company of the Winged Riders of Kislev.

WHAT'S GOOD:
I enjoyed the surprising directions the author takes the characters. Educated, sensitive Karl, who is clearly the hero at the beginning is the one who finds himself corrupted. Meanwhile, prejudiced and brutal Gerlach's mind is opened by his experiences and the new friends he makes. It was also interesting to get some details of Kislevite culture upon the open Steppe and Abnett does a good job of bringing it to life.

WHAT'S BAD:
As with most Warhammer novels, the violence and gore is overdone to the point where it detracts from the story. Also, I'm sick of Warhammer books that simply deal with Chaos hoardes and corrupted heroes. Warhammer is such a rich fantasy world, why do the authors keep going over and over the same ground?
