Review
Patrick Redmond's The Wishing Game was a novel of complexity and insight, and this successor is even more gripping and psychologically acute. Redmond's two central characters seem fated to meet - and their inevitable union will have dark consequences. Susan Ramsey has enjoyed a privileged existence; born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth, she is the eponymous apple of her parents' eye. But Ronnie Sidney comes from a very different background: his father and mother never married, and he has given his mother a reason for living, counteracting all the negative aspects of her life with his devotion. But there's more to Ronnie than meets the eye, and he is troubled by undercurrents visible to no one but himself. The meeting of Susan and Ronnie is quickly followed by passionate love - and Susan thinks that her life is about to change. It is - irrevocably - but not in the way she thinks. There are hints of William Trevor here in the deceptively attractive surfaces that mask disturbing truths, and Redmond is adroit at drawing the reader deeper and deeper into an unsettling world. Redmond already has a considerable following, and Apple of My Eye will add to the number of his admirers. (Kirkus UK)
Product Description
Ronnie Sidney is a perfect child. The illegitimate by-product of a wartime romance, he gives his mother unconditional love when all she has known is loss, rejection and contempt. In her eyes, he is faultless: a glorious ray of sunshine in the grey of her existence. But beneath the golden exterior, a very different nature wages an ever stronger fight for life. For Susan Ramsey, life is easy. Cherished by her parents, she knows nothing of hardship or misery. Until the sudden death of her father - and an introduction to a new and deeply disturbing world. When Susan and Ronnie meet, the attraction is instant. Each recognises the soulmate for whom they have longed. At last Ronnie feels able to remove his mask of perfection. But, like Pandora's Box, what is released can never again be restrained.
