Titan Books continue their series of novels based on Star Trek: The Next Generation with #04: Survivors by Jean Lorrah.
The events of this book take place between the episodes `The Arsenal Of Freedom' and `Symbiosis' and continues as an epilogue to `Skin Of Evil' in the first season. There are also references to `The Naked Now' and `Angel One' as well. As such this story precedes novel number three, The Children Of Hamlin by Carmen Carter, and the epilogue comes after that story.
The Federation receives a message from Nalavia, ruler of the planet Treva which is a colony world on the edge of Federation space. They had been assessed for Federation membership but incidents on the planet had delayed their admission. Now, Nalavia is pleading for help from Starfleet to stop terrorist attacks carried out by Rikan, last of the old warlords who is threatening to unseat the current government and return to the old ways.
With the Enterprise required to carry out another mission, Picard sends Tasha Yar and Data to go in a shuttle and meet with Nalavia to assess the situation and the ship will rejoin them a few days later.
This story is tied in with alternating chapters of Tasha's life as she finds disturbing parallels of the troubles of Treva with her home colony of New Paris. Flashbacks take us to when Tasha was fifteen and rescued by Starfleet officer Darryl Adin and her relationship with him through to the age of twenty two. The flashbacks really flesh out her character, more so than anything in season one of the show, and add to the plot.
The Next Generation novels are getting better and better and this one focuses mainly on Tasha Yar and also the majority of the rest the time with Data. His interactions with Tasha are well written and the infamous incident of `The Naked Now' is explored in several ways which expand his development on human nature, the emotion of love and his growing friendships with the crew.
There are several twists and turns in the plot and a great one comes near the end for those people who missed a subtle clue at the beginning. The characters are all written extremely well and it helps that the book is set in the end of season one when there had been time to establish who these people are.
The supporting cast; Darryl Adin, S'dan, Nalavia, Poet, Barb, Rikan and numerous others have also been written with skill and really make the world of Treva come alive. After Lorrah's previous Classic Trek entries with the excellent two-part The Vulcan Academy Murders and The I.D.IC. Epidemic, she shows that she can turn her hand to writing a great Next Generation story too.
A great read and a worthwhile addition to any Trek library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revolution and ghosts from the past..., 19 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Treva is an isolated human colony that wishes to join the Federation. This means that when a distress signal is received the Enterprise is despatched to investigate.

Data and Tasha Yar the chief of security, are sent to the plant to meet with its leaders and are soon embroiled in a revolution that brings Tasha face to face with her past.

More insight into the relationship between Tasha and Data, this fast paced addition to the ST-NG series also tells us more of Tasha Yar's personal history before Starfleet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poor cat, 3 Sep 2003

An excellent Tasha book, (I think we really needed one as she wasn’t around for long) as this book really helps you to understand her life before star fleet. In the book she is quickly swept off from the enterprise to some planet to clear up a whole no-win diplomatic issue… with Data, of course, it’s a Jean Lorah book.
Good writer, entertaining, and always quite feminine in her need to tease us with sexy scenes that make you feel quite naughty wanting to know more. (Gossip). It’s a good book for Data fans as well, as he becomes aware of feelings, as such, of jealousy, revenge… and love, ooh yes it sounds very juicy doesn’t it? Oh.. and I cried.

This book is great in the continuum of the books… try reading Metamorphosis after this, same author, and carries a few characters on with it.
