5.0 out of 5 stars A SPLENDID READING OF A POIGNANT STORY, 2 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Film and stage actress Maryann Plunkett is a splendid choice to read Elizabeth Berg's latest novel, "Never Change." Once again Ms. Berg adroitly offers a less than sanguine protagonist who's getting along by getting along.

Myra Lipsinsky is 51, unmarried, and convinced she never will be. She has devoted herself to her career as a visiting nurse, and to the care and well being of her dog, Frank. Myra describes her youthful self as "the one everybody liked but no one wanted to be with." Things haven't changed much over the years - that is until Chip Reardon, the love of Myra's life in high school, returns to town.

But Chip has come back home for a tragic reason - he is dying, and Myra becomes his nurse.

Skillful author that she is Ms. Berg paints their relationship with insight and depth. This is a story well worth the listening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Never Change, 27 Nov 2002
This review is from: Never Change (Paperback)
The author of this book, Elizabeth Berg, has been described before by various reviewers and readers to be picking up where Freud couldn't as pertaining to the question of, "What do women really want?" - This after her phenomenal best seller Open House. In Never Change she demonstrates fully a richly deserved reputation for an ability to get right under a women's skin to prick at the moments that leave indelible changes on the human heart.
In the story the middle-aged heroine Myra Lipinsky is a much loved and respected freelance visiting nurse whose life to date, whilst being uneventful and freed from the various emotional upheavals, has been lived in the shadow of those patients whom she so lovingly ministers and cares for.
Then she is suddenly assigned a new patient, a man by the name of Chip Reardon, who is by chance, the very same golden boy that she adored from afar during her high school years, and so Myra is thus presented with the opportunity of fulfilling a long-held childhood fantasy. Unfortunately Chip is suffering from advanced cancer and the prognosis, needless to say, is not good at all.
Loving, detailed, painful and insightful, Never Change charts Myra's slow discovery that it is never too late to love. A deeply emotional and moving book, but all readers however, be warned: tissues are a prerequisite for this tender and endearing novel about the emotions of loving and heartbreak of losing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful weepie
Yet another spellbinder from this author. Feeling an outsider all her life, Myra loves but never gets to keep the class hero, Chip; he 'belongs' to the school beauty queen. Read more
