2.0 out of 5 stars Richard Calders Lexicon of Theology, 20 Feb 2003
.
...would be a very fitting alternate title to this book. Impakto is actually too well written- with just a little more flourish the whole thing could have been turned into a very good epic poem. Instead, with his editor sitting back and saying 'yeah Richard, that sounds good' what we have here is a very good story which has been stretched almost to breaking point with far too much emphasis on style over the admittedly good content.

This book is more a fantasy novel than a science fiction one as it deals with demons and angels, heaven and hell and the confusing place of a 'human' from both. The simple fact that there's a 'space ship' in the story does not make for science fiction, in my opinion.

There are very good points in the book about the nature of good and evil, some subtle bits of theology, a few good scraps and a bit of strange romance as well. But with so much time spent in the lead characters poetically- speeched head, you end up skimming through sections to get on with the story.

Could have been a great action packed novella, goes on a bit as it is.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's a great story in there somewhere., 23 Jan 2003
With a gothic demon universe and a full frontal assault on the hosts of heaven, added to an exotic Asian locale, you'd be forgiven for thinking that this book had just about everything. It also has nearly every word in the English language. Overwritten to bursting point, the story is very much swamped by a style of writing that is half pulp and half thesaurus listings. Still, the narrative, where it is allowed to poke through is interesting and a couple of the set pieces have a great visual power. Would have been five stars if a bit more streamlined.

3.0 out of 5 stars Impakto, 13 Oct 2007

I'm normally a huge fan of Richard Calder's novels, but for some reason 'Impakto' just didn't quite work for me. The concepts here are intruiging, featuring nothing less than an attempt by demonic beings to overthrow a newly created God before he takes over reality, but the gap between Calder's poetic prose and the pulpish adventure material makes for an uncomfortable mishash, with Calder's normally evocative writing seeming rather over the top. Added to this the backstory of the mythology presented seems overly complicated and confusing, with characters slaved to the plot. There are certainly some vivid scenes along the way, but as a whole this is probably Calder's least successful novel.
