5.0 out of 5 stars Science fiction at its most poetic, 23 Jul 2001
Robert Silverberg is an old hand, but do not mistake him with an old hack. He has been writing science fiction for many years now and, unlike many, his work gets better and better. Poetry fans will recognise the allusion to W.B. Yeats's poem in the title of this collection: a poem which asks questions about what we leave behind - and what we could, if we have the choice. The story "Sailing to Byzantium", which is the focal point of this collection, examines the human race "out of nature". In a future world, time has been made irrelelvent, and human beings persue pleasure by recreating historical locations and cultures. Sounds ordinary? Well, Silverberg's genius lies not so much in the description of the future world, but in the delineation of one resident's psychological difficulty adapting to this utopia. There's a twist in the tale as well which keeps us reading. But the real genius is in the writing. Silverberg pulls off the nearly impossible trick of writing in a style which is both poetic and gripping. If you missed these stories the first time round, don't miss them this time.
