Product Description

Independent on Sunday, August 12, 2007

In it's simple, understated way this book manages to capture something that feels awkwardly authentic. Desperatley annoying ... and painfully compelling.

New Statesman, August 30, 2007

An intriguing meditation on fame and posterity. A thoughtful novel that stands out in a world of identikit publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are You With Me? - every step of the way!, 4 Oct 2007
This brought back so many poignant memories of a childhood in rural Hertfordshire..........maybe less flat than Norfolk but still with the same amount of boredom and angst. Stephen Foster has a way of capturing the essence of life with a wry turn of phrase - one minute you're laughing, the next you're almost in tears. He is brilliant and thought provoking writer and this book deserves to be in the top ten bestsellers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Different but better, 19 Sep 2007
I gave this book four stars because, although it is a novel, the dog-lovers who gave the writer's previous book five stars may miss the light-hearted charm of life with Ollie even though there is also a scene-stealing dog in this story. It is a very different book but has the same controlled yet irresistible narrative pull. The main character,Tom, maintains an intense magnetic presence, from his accepting but observant 11 yr old self to the hard-won self-possession of his early adulthood. Tom journeys through grief, a dramatic change of place, and the urban warfare that is teenage life, but does it all with the evidence-based logic of the boy we meet in the first few pages. He watches others constantly, but suppresses his wariness so that he appears imperturbable, sound, solid. Somehow he survives rural ennui, sex and cars by means of an internal dialogue between the man he must never forget and the man he hopes to become. At moments the book comfortably loses the reader in the complex linguistics of teenage patois but just when you think you have all that sussed the real issues strike again - loyalty, self-realisation and triumph over loss. Things that cripple adolescents are addressed by this book, lost or missing parents, living in social wasteland, the brutal parasitism of reality TV and the depth-charges of sex, aggression and financial hardship, but they are dealt with in the light dispassionate way of the kids themselves, a few lines of a song, a meaningful phrase. The artless storytelling gives the reader a profound sense of transubstantiation, the taste of this new life leaving one wanting to meet Tom again - further along his journey.
