Cottam returns to the Second World War for this, his second novel. In his first he told the story of those who fought the effects of the Blitz in London; now he turns his attention to the enemy, to a 'good' German. Hamer is a veteran of the war with Russia who has survived the siege of Stalingrad and has been wounded and awarded a medal for his bravery and patriotism. Although he cannot come to terms with certain aspects of his country's present government he is determined to salvage Germany's honour, lost after the Great War, in the humiliating peace they were forced to make. Cottam concentrates on building the character of his hero: strong, ruthless and honourable in an ignoble cause. His narrative dances between past and present creating friends and family and describing telling incidents to convey the atmosphere both of pre-war Nazi rule and a Reich determined to conquer. Hamer is sent to Poland to recover his strength and finds himself in a small concentration camp. There he falls foul of the camp doctor and comes to love a Polish woman prisoner. This is a book full of thrills and Bulldog Drummond situations. Nipples harden, bullets zing and men wrestle to the death. There is much talk of boxing, mountain climbing and manhood. The choice of a concentration camp victim for the woman is as tasteless as it is unlikely but on the level of an adventure story it succeeds. The plot is derivative with shades of the film Amen, but such comparisons only emphasize the sensational tissue of this story. (Kirkus UK)

As the lives of these five characters unfold, it becomes clear the strike will have devastating repercussions - not only for those directly involved, but for future generations too.
