Product Description

Product Description

An explosive behind-the-scenes inside account of the rock music world. Life changed for Michael Francis at the age of 21 when Paul McCartney walked into his father's boxing gym to watch his friend John Conteh preparing for a fight. Paul hired Michael as his security guard, beginning a thirty-year music business career in which he worked with such legendary names as Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Osmonds, Sheena Easton, Frank Sinatra, Bon Jovi, Cher and Kiss. As tour manager, Michael was responsible for every aspect of their safety and their comfort, from making sure they were not mobbed on stage to making sure they got paid. Whatever they wanted, he got hold of. To some of them he became close. He was best man at Jon Bon Jovi's wedding, and provided personal security for five years for Cher at her Malibu home. He shared their wildest excesses, their highs and their lows; he saw their fears and, all too often, their loneliness and paranoia. Sometimes hilarious, frequently shocking, always perceptive, Star Man is the outrageous, uncompromising and brutally honest story of one man's life with the biggest stars of rock.

About the Author

The son of world-renowned boxing trainer George Francis, Michael Francis was born and brought up in Camden Town. After thirty years on the road, he quit the music business on his fiftieth birthday when one last event-filled tour with American Superstars Kiss convinced him he'd had enough. He now runs his own international security consultancy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Rock'n'Roll reading, 22 Oct 2003
This book us a must if you're a rock fan - the man who looked after Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi and Kiss telling his story - it's a gotta have!

Much has been said about the Bon Jovi 'syndicate' and here for the first time it's a touch exposed. Michael just gives as good as he got - and as Jon said to him about his being dropped from the touring party, 'it's not personal, just business'.

The lid is lifted on the real r'n'r excesses of all the bands Michael talks about - we all knew that none of them were squaeky clean despite their media images and it's nice to get a little bit of truth from somebody who was close to it.

On top of all the r'n'r Michael lets us into his personal life and talks about the balancing act of being on tour and having a loving and tight knit family.

I couldn't put this book down - I cannot recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book you never want to end, 20 Nov 2003
By Miss N Coyne (London, England United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I originally purchased for my boyfriend but picked up off the coffe table to browse through one sunday afternoon. It took me three weeks to put it back! It was breathtakingly frank, funny, entertaining, honest and a wonderful insight in to the world of Michael Francis and the ups and downs of life with the stars. He opens up his life for all to see (warts and all). the book is very charismatic and hynotic to read and thoroughly enjoyable. He is a very talented writer and the book has been written very well indeed, we can only hope for a second installment from him! One of best books I have read in years.
