4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining, but ultimately disappointing book, 6 Dec 2001
By TJ Ramsbottom "tramsbottom2" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stephen King is my favorite writer. Don't get me wrong. And I loved this book. But it ends with more of a wimper than a bang which is sad because the rest of the story is so engaging.
Once a year, four friends meet up to go hunting in the woods where one day a spaceship happens to land. A wanderer appears, a hunter who got lost in the woods, and he seems to be acting very strange.
Aliens, it seems, are intent on taking over the earth and a secret branch of the military are sent out to clean up the mess.
Like all Stephen King's books, a member of this operation is utterly insane, which I thought was a little unnecessary. You could almost hear the conversation between King and his agent:
"Steve, we need more crazy people. People love nutjobs. How about Kurtz?"
"Well...okay."
This isn't King's finest hour but like his pal Dean Koontz, he's maturing as an author. The ending is a let down but Dreamcatcher has more ideas and entertainment than most other Horror novels put together.
A movie is being made of this book, with Morgan Freeman as Kurtz(?!) and Lawrence Kasdan as director. I was excited about seeing Dreamcatcher on the big screen but Lawrence Kasdan?! He's made one 'okay' movie! This story needs a director on their way up, like David Fincher or a director who can do no wrong (Robert Zemeckis anyone?).
In any case, I'm sure the movie won't be as good as the book. So check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't knock it. It's great., 8 May 2003
I've seen a lot of other people's reviews about this book and simply cannot understand what they are talking about. They say that they have a problem with the ending but anything else would have been too unbelievable. I thought all the characters were great, especially the whole Mr Gray/Jonesy scenario. I have also seen the film and, though it isn't as good as the book, it is certainly worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars An imaginitive and Intriguing slant on Alien Invasion., 13 April 2001
By J. graveling (Italy) - See all my reviews

King at his best again, he takes you on a journey of man's fear of the unknown and couples this with a group of friends with a special bond King has the ability to see the darker side of man, Kurtz is a perfect example of this.Whilst the other main characters offer hope and possible redemption, but can they stop Kurtz or Mr Gray?.
