Product Description

Product Description
Haunted by the brutal killing of his UN interpreter wife in Bosnia, ex-SAS operative, Ed Coltrane, is consumed with the need to hunt down her murderers. Drinking too much and spending too much on his search, his life is going into meltdown. Just as it seems he can fall no further, a former colleague informs him that one of his wife's killers is in London, as a guest of the British government. Certain, unofficial figures in the corridors of power would like to see this man disappear, and they'd like Ed Coltrane to accept the contract. Although he is finished with the service, and has no desire to commit what amounts to a state-sanctioned murder, the desire for revenge is too strong, and Coltrane agrees to pull the trigger. What he doesn't know is that there is an elaborate game of bluff and double-bluff being played throughout Europe, and certain high-ranking officials have a vested interest in his failure and removal. Thus begins a dangerous journey into the dark heart of modern Europe, where Ed Coltrane finds himself in deadly conflict with the new mafias and security apparatus of an emerging superstate. At the centre of everything is a secret act of national betrayal that is as shocking as it is unexpected. All that is required to bring it to fruition is to silence one man. Unluckily for the architects of treason, that man is Ed Coltrane. And he's in no mood to compromise.

5.0 out of 5 stars HE'S BACK!!, 7 May 2004
By M. J. Maley "mikeitup" (here) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
TERENCE STRONG RETURNS WITH ANOTHER ENTERTAINING AND THOUGHT PROVOKING THRILLER. THIS BOOK POSES QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE UK INTELLIGENCE SERVICES AND WHETHER WE SHOULD BE PART OF THE EU. STRONG SPECIALISES IN AUTHENTICITY AND THIS BOOK DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPECIAL FORCES IS AGAIN USED AS A MAJOR PART OF THIS NOVEL AND IT MOVES AT A BREAKNECK PACE TWISTING AND TURNING LIKE A.... TWISTY TURNY THING (THANKS BLACKADDER!).HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
THIS IS MR. STRONGS FIRST BOOK IN 6 YEARS. I JUST HOPE I DON'T HAVE TO WAIT THAT LONG FOR HIS NEXT ONE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 31 Jan 2005
By Peter Symonds "petersym" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cold Monday (Paperback)
This is the first Terence Strong Novel I've read but it certainly won't be the last. The plot is an often used one, but there's a distinct twist to it. Ex-SAS man Ed Coltrane left the Army after his UN-translator wife was horrendously murdered by Serbian Para-military troops in Bosnia. He's spent the last few years trying to hunt down the three men responsible, but with little luck. Out of cash he's about to give up when an "intelligence officer" he used to work with tells him where one of the killers is- working for British intelligence. Unfortunately for the killer, Leonid Rusjivic, he's more of a liability than an asset to MI6 who pay Coltrane £10,000 to "get rid of him". While the money is useful, the killing gives British intelligence a useful hold over Coltrane. If he steps out of line the police will tipped off where to find Rusjivic's killer- and revenge for the murder of his wife is such a perfect motive that no-one will believe his wild claims about MI6.

Shortly afterwards Coltrane is approached by a former colonel, turned euro-MP who believes he's going to be killed for investigating EU corruption. He's right- only a few days later he's blow up & Coltrane has the last surviving copy of his dossier. Wanted for murder, Coltrane goes on the run. Not only do our own security forces want him dead, but powerful men within the EU want rid of him & their influence is far reaching.

This novel could have been an awful hybrid of anti-European propaganda supported by a 3rd rate Jack Higgins/Robert Ludlum style plot. However its so well written that it works. Although fiction, this book isn't too far from the truth and portrays a frightening vision of a super federalized Europe- today's paper carried a story about concern over the powers of European arrest warrants. You can now be arrested in Britain by European police for committing acts that aren't even illegal in Britain, but may be in other European countries. Extradition rules no longer apply within Europe. European law now supersedes national laws. Likewise the scale of EU corruption is unbelievable- so much money has vanished that it's impossible to even ESTIMATE how much vanishes each year. Sadly too, war criminals from the former Yugoslavia are deeply involved with organized crime & the security services have always been willing to turn a blind eye to someone's past if it suits their current requirements. I hope what's describes in this book doesn't happen, but only a fool would say it couldn't happen.

"Cold Monday" should be thoroughly recommended to anyone wanting an intelligent thriller that equals Gerald Seymour's best. It'll maybe make you listen more closely to the latest discussions about Europe too.........

1.0 out of 5 stars Where is the REAL Terence Strong?, 3 April 2006
This review is from: Cold Monday (Paperback)
I have read every book by this author more than once over many years. His early writings were excellent reads, intelligently written and storylines others could not come close to. The last couple of books have been a little disappointing and I am convinced that Cold Monday was not written by Terence Strong. This is a terrible book!

It has all been done before, just read McNab or Ryan or other special forces novels. A lot Strong's previous novels have had that air of possibility about them but this story has no credibility about it at all.

Characterisation is poor at best, interaction is wooden and storyline is ridiculous. If this were my first Strong novel, I would not buy anymore, fortunately I've read the best and I'll weather the worst! I am about to read "wheels of fire" by the same author - watch this space!

I read by another reviewer that this is their first book and they thought it was great. If that's the case then he/she will certainly like most of the others - as for this one, instantly forgettable!!
