5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant, 29 Dec 2001

I could not put this book down, it works on so may levels. It will keep you guessing right up to the end and beyond. What is real? What is the real nature of coincidence? To say more would be to reveal too much. This is a book just waiting to be made into a film......

4.0 out of 5 stars Pacy, reliable, darkly funny, 8 May 2005
By Whittaker "Whit" (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coincidence (Paperback)
One of the synchronicity episodes that really intrigued Carl Jung occurred with a patient recounting her dream of a golden scarab beetle. A young woman that Jung had been treating told him of a dream in which she had been given a golden scarab. He was sitting with his back to a closed window while she told him the dream.

Suddenly he heard a gentle tapping and turned to see a flying insect knocking against the window-pane from outside. Jung opened the window and caught the creature in the air as it flew in. The insect closely resembled a golden scarab. In actuality it was a scarabaeid beetle, the common rose-chafer (Cetonia aurata).

Normally, such insects would not come into a dark room, but at the same moment the patient mentioned the beetle she had been given in her dream, this beetle appeared at Jung's window. He was quite astonished at the coincidental timing and admitted that nothing like it ever happened to me before or since.

David Ambrose's novel Coincidences is all about synchronicity. The main protagonist, George Daly, recounts Jung's famous tale of the scarab beetle. As he prepares to write a book on the subject of coincidences he experiences strange moments of synchronicity or is it just apophenia? This book is packed with philosophical musing as Daly tries to make sense of his world and what is happening to him. The plot is darkly amusing and chilling in equal parts. Its a pacy read let down slightly by the denouement, which had a touch of the "... and then I woke up ..." but recovers well with a shock ending.
