5.0 out of 5 stars Gem amid the dross, 13 Aug 2003
The management genre is defined by its weird fusion of obscurantism and banality, which makes the arrival of something so intelligently lucid a rare joy. This book should be the new benchmark for business writing. It might put a lid of the endless faddish nonsense that clogs the shelves.

The real achievement of the book is to so convincingly describe the fundamental business paradox: that the ingredients of success are simple things but they are very difficult to implement. There are other significant strengths in its neat history of business concepts and its unflashy use of case studies. And not only is it lucid and intelligent, but it is quite often a pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!, 6 Aug 2004

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Those who say, "Good grief, not another book on management," may rest assured that this volume is worth careful study. Author Joan Magretta and collaborator Nan Stone offer advice based on decades of business experience and, yet, they distill the obnoxious "consultant-speak" so common to the field to clearly understandable, conversational terms. While at times they may seem to have a firm grasp on the obvious - investments are risky and managers need to make good choices - their work is fundamentally sound overall, offering practical case studies and real-world examples. This book takes common business concepts such as the "80-20 Rule," shines an insightful light upon them and then advances into more complex ground. We recommend this broad, new perspective on the growing social importance of effective management.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best since Drucker, 20 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Outstandingly good. This is indeed a rare management book. While most management books are, rightly, derided for their poorly-written vacuousness this is a succinct, well written, and deeply insightful exploration of the core concepts of management. Accessible to any intelligent teenager the contents would also be profitably read by any large enterprise CEO.
