Product Description

Book Description

Here is one of those rare novels that completely transports
the reader to an
unforgettable time and place in history. Follow Me to Glory is the story
of a young Scottish nobleman's journey to becoming a warrior and a leader.
In the fall of 1854, one of the bitterest and most mismanaged campaigns in
military history is about to begin. The attention of Britain is focused on
the Crimea, where victory will be won or lost. Captain Ian Carlyle,
magnetic, professional and audacious, prepares to lead his men into harm's
way against the brutal Russians. You will live it with him as he comes to
terms with the chaos, and appalling truth about courage, duty, and the
terrible price of glory - one horrific battle at a time.

Major Colin Robins, OBE FRHistS, Editor Emeritus, `The War Correspondent'
- Journal of the Crimean War Research Society

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and well researched, 29 May 2008
This is an exciting and well researched historical novel. Knowing a little about the Crimean War, I can see that Hutchison has gone to great lengths to maintain historical authenticity in his work and yet he maintains a lively pace and an exciting story line.

He skillfully weaves real life characters into his fictional plot in a realistic way, which is quite an achievement. I was impressed that he resisted the temptation to over dramatise some incidents such as the Charge of the Light Brigade and Captain Nolan's culpability. Many authors would have fallen into the trap of over exaggeration and involving the hero in more famous events than would be likely in real life and Hutchison avoids this. It is a better book because of this. Though characters such as Raglan, Nolan, Goodlake and Seacole (amongst others) come into contact with the eponymous Ian Carlyle, it is achieved in a subtle and believable manner.

Although the battle scenes are well handled, the description of Inkerman excels in its depiction of the confused and bitter fighting during a battle which is often overlooked in favour of the Alma and Balaklava. All three are well handled along with a chilling description of the squalor in the siege trenches before Sevastopol.

I found the aristocratic Carlysle a far more believable character than many recent authors attempts to insert working class or politically correct heros into their fiction. Admittedly he occasionally displays a slightly modern attitude but a totally authentic historical character is very difficult to create while still retaining the flow of an exciting story.

This is a very fine novel and I hope it may be the first of many in a series involving Carlyle. Can we hope to see accounts of his further adventures in the Indian Mutiny or the American Civil War perhaps?

3.0 out of 5 stars Escape from the modern world , 17 Mar 2007
By Dani Marie H. Brown "Author An Untimely Death" (Dothan Alabama) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I love this novel; it's a great escape from the modern world as well as an entertaining and enlightening European military history lesson. There are a variety of colorful characters including Jasmine, who is an unusual woman for the 1800's. Ian, the hero of the story is intriguing in his own right as he defies the rules of society and the wishes of his family, to follow his own dreams on the battlefield.

It is obvious that Mr. Hutchison is schooled in military strategy though he conveys his knowledge in language a civilian can easily understand and appreciate. Detailed maps and illustrations further enlighten the non military reader, while the erotic love affair woven throughout the story keeps Ian and the reader guessing. I would strongly recommend this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can smell the gunpowder!, 6 Mar 2007
By Kit Carson (Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
FOLLOW ME TO GLORY - Lieutenant Ian Carlyle springs instantly to life and keeps you reveling in the minute details of combat with the Scots Fusilier Guards. You can feel the fear, self-doubt, eventual sense of accomplishment, and joy of survival right alongside Ian Carlyle and the other ranks under his fine command. This is a wonderful historical novel; a coming of age story set smack-dab in the middle of the major engagements of the Crimean War.
Hyper-realistic portrayals of courage in its many forms make for a cracking-good tale that keeps you turning pages long into the night.

This is a gritty tale that superbly mixes historical figures with authentic characters. You can experience the combat through their eyes and emotions. The action is riveting and coupled with lusty diversions that unerringly depict the period. A natural story-teller, Will Hutchison lets you see Crimean War combat through Lieutenant Ian Carlyle's eyes; direct, immediate, muddy, and powder stained. Nobody has created a more detailed and intimate look at personal and small unit fighting in the Crimea.
