5.0 out of 5 stars Hip hop comic strips for the new millenium, 8 Dec 2000
By A Customer
At last! For those who follow the fine American art of the newspaper strip, 'The Boondocks' has been essential viewing on the web for the last few years. Winding up those with closed minds to the issues of race - the strips' own website publishes the most offensive letters and emails they receive - the 'docks is the first strip to acknowledge that hip hop is the only major cultural driving force in American society at the current time.

But tracking down newspaper websites is a long and bothersome business. Here, finally, is a collection of the funniest, most dangerous strip to have appeared since 'Doonsbury' in the early seventies. Aaron McGruder's world centres around Huey Freeman, a 'radical Black scholar' who would love nothing more than to reform the Black Panthers and rescussitate Black Power.

Unfortunately, as he's a pre-teen living in a suburban white neighbourhood wth his Grandpa and younger brother, he's got to deal with mowing the lawn, getting hassle off teachers, and railing against what George Lucas did with the Star Wars series in 'The Phantom Menace'.

Skewering childhood as accurately as 'Calvin & Hobbes', and the racial/politcal preoccupations of America as neatly as the aforementioned 'Doonesbury', 'The Boondocks' cast of buppies, pre-teen wannabe thugs and tae-bo practicing senior citizens look set to be a fixture in the comic strip world for the foreseeable. Good thing too.
