4.0 out of 5 stars strong personal history, 18 Oct 2001
Wing Ding is a classic autobiography of an aviator in the second world war.Although relatively short it is certainly worth reading and an important addition to any collection.Air combat, despite being an equal in terms of bravery, horror, skill etc.to other types of combat, can tend to be quite samey as an author takes you through mission after mission which will be either a milk run or flak & fighters. It is worthwhile to note therefore that Mr Carson includes pesonal details such as his interaction with the local populace between missions( in particular female interaction!)life for an overseas soldier, the other members of his crew and lastly his brother who was living a similar story in another theatre of war. These details are what really bring this type of memoir to life by generating a link between author and reader that makes the book a subjective rather than objective experience.
Recommended.
