2.0 out of 5 stars Positive but nothing new, 9 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This book presents some very positive views about dyslexia and dyslexics but I have to say, some needlessly negative views about teaching and teachers (and I am NOT a teacher myself!). As a parent of a severely dyslexic and very bright son, I feel that presenting these negative views is unhelpful.

Furthermore anyone looking to this book as a 'cure' is looking in the wrong place. What this amounts to is a reading method - there are no materials as such - and if spectacular results have been obtained by using it, I question whether similar results would not have been acheived by all manner of other things done with the same intensity and application of parent's one-on-one time.

Again, speaking personally, since my experience is so limited, simply repeating reading does not 'cure' dyslexia. The problem for most dyslexics is a lack of memory and an inability to transfer things from short term to long term memory; what is needed is a multisensory system. This is sort of multi sensory but there are, in my view, other systems (such as Toe-by-Toe or Beat Dyslexia) which are easier to apply and less daunting for both adult and child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant...Inspiring, 5 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Like many parents with a Dyslexic child, I was in despair until I read this book. It's written in a wonderfully sensitive & caring way & at the same time it contains masses of information & teaching techniques. Tired of being "fobbed" off by my son's school & frustrated by the lack of "formal" help, I really was beginning to think that my child was never going to be able to read. After only 3 months of using this book - well what can I say - incredible. My son now has a future. Every school & every library in the U.K. should have a copy of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable teaching tool, 5 April 2001
By A Customer
As a primary school teacher in Newcastle, I'm often confronted by questions about Dyslexia from parents. This book has saved me numerous hours scouring the net or seeking library resources. I now recommend this book to any parent who wishes to know about, and also who wish to help their children overcome, Dyslexia. Inspiring.
