Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Richard Stone's Mammoth offers a kindred scenario to that made famous by Jurassic Park: the establishment of a "Pleistocene Park" in which long-extinct creatures like the mammoth, sabre-toothed tiger, and woolly rhino could be resurrected and given sanctuary.

This is not a science-fiction vision, we learn from science journalist Stone's absorbing journey into recent prehistory; already scientists from Russia, Canada, the United States and other nations are studying the possibility of restoring a stretch of northern Siberia to its Pleistocene condition, thereby creating what they call a "mammoth steppe" populated by bison, Yakutian horses and elephants--and one day, perhaps, creatures such as the woolly mammoth, genetically "summoned from the world of the dead". The materials are readily available, Stone writes, in the form of DNA-bearing "muscles and ligaments and fat" found in mammoths now buried in arctic permafrost; whether those remnants can be made to bring back to life what Siberians call the "rat beneath the ice" is another question, but one that many scholars are busily exploring.

While looking into what he calls "a watershed in efforts to study lost ecosystems", Stone provides a lively natural history of the mammoth and evaluates conflicting theories on its extinction. His book makes for a memorable journey into unknown scientific territory--and a glimpse at a possible future that is surpassing strange. --Gregory McNamee --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Times
'His upbeat book offers a grounding in mammoth palaeontology, past and present.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ice Mammoth Cometh, 4 Jul 2002
The mammoth was the biggest animal to share the earth with early man. An abundant creature in Siberia, the remains of many have been preserved in the permafrost.

An Ice Age success tory, Stone points out that there are six known species, originating in Africa and spreading into Europe and Asia. These were cousins of the modern elephant, not its ancestors.

Evidence is beginning to hint at the fact that it was the changing patterns of weather which led to their extinction. The Earth began to warm up 11,500 years ago, robbing the mammoth of its natural habitat - human hunters did nothing to encourage the survival of these huge creatures.

Now, Soviet scientists are trying to reverse the process, to find, Jurassic Park-like, DNA within preserved cadavers which will allow them to recreate the mammoth.

Stone provides an entertaining detective story, exploring the natural history of the great beasts and evaluating the likelihood of their restoration to the planet. It's a tale with substance - in an era of global warming, we have to ask how fragile is the climate which supports animals and societies less sturdy than the mammoth.

A very nice narrative for a hopeful expedition to discover a complete carcass of the fascinating Mammoth. Richard Stone follows a Russian team, a Japanese Team and a French Consortium seeking the discovery of a complete Mammoth fossil. Each of the teams have their own goals and dreams. Some of the scientists involved want to resurrect the Giant through DNA and cloanning with Elephants. Will the Elusive Mammoth share all of its secrets?? Read the book and find out
