Product Description

Product Description

For the millions who suffer from the effects of a traumatic experience, this book offers help and hope and provides the diverse elements needed for lasting recovery. Trauma can take many forms, from the most disturbing of circumstances such as witnessing a murder or violent crime to the subtle trauma of living with the effects of abuse or alcoholism. Deep emotional wounds often seem like they will never heal, but Schiraldi has helped and witnessed survivors recover, grow, and find happiness.

By helping people recognize the coping mechanisms and by dealing directly with the effects of a traumatic experience, there is a great reason for hope. The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Sourcebook is a guide for both survivors and their loved ones, helping them to see that on the other side of their pain is recovery and growth.

  • Explains the psychic defenses that can go into effect to protect a victim from further emotional harm
  • Provides information on triggers and the debilitating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Addresses how the healing process can begin and how fear diminishes through a variety of medic and nonmedicinal treatment methods

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive look at the causes of PTSD and how to treat it, 11 Aug 2008
By Rolf Dobelli "getAbstract.com" (Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Some people's lives are picture-perfect, filled with sunny days, starry nights and happy weekends. The good times just keep on coming. For post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) victims, things also go on forever. Over and over, they mentally relive their most traumatic experiences in a continuing nightmare. PTSD is insidious. First you are the victim of severe, unspeakable trauma. Then, like a ghost, the trauma comes back to haunt you. Many associate PTSD only with combat veterans. However, almost any severe, stressful event can cause PTSD, be it rape or assault, abuse, a natural disaster, a terrorist attack or an accident. PTSD is a deadly, serious problem that plagues its victims. Fortunately, it does not have to be a life sentence. Treatment is available and recovery is possible, as Glenn R. Schiraldi explains in this thorough sourcebook. In fact, he states firmly that PTSD is curable with the proper therapies. If you or someone you care about suffers from PTSD, getAbstract thinks this book could be useful, helpful and encouraging.

1.0 out of 5 stars No help, 3 Jul 2009
By Glenn "Glenn Jensen" (Copenhagen, Denmark) - See all my reviews

Although describing the disease PTSD, the solutions offered in the book did not help me at all. It endorses professional help, and after reading the "Sourcebook" I had more questions than answers. Besides, it is aimed at US readers. The section with where to find help only refers to North American sources.
