Product Description

Scott Kelby offers full-color, graphically rich, linear, tutorial- and project-based examples of every key step in the digital photography process. From experimenting with camera settings, through capturing and manipulating the image, through editing, output and organization, this book is designed for the digital photographer who knows aesthetics but who wants a concise guide to "grip it and rip it" usage of digital technology. Photoshop Elements is a very powerful and affordable image editing software. It carries many of the same features Photoshop does without the complicated graphs and tools. It also carries it all at a much less expensive price tag - only $99, compared Photoshop's $600. Anyone making the transition from film to digital photography will learn the stuff that is critical for Photoshop Elements -- no theory, no challenging the readers to come up with their own settings. This book shows the readers exactly "how to do it."

Scott Kelby is President of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), and is Editor-in-chief of both Photoshop User and Mac Design magazines. Throughout the year, Scott serves as Training Director for the Adobe Photoshop Seminar Tour and is technical chair of the largest Photoshop gathering, Photoshop World. Scott is one of the leading Photoshop trainers in the country today and trains thousands of Photoshop users across the country each year, and is featured in a series of Photoshop training videos. He has written 6 best-selling books on Photoshop and on digital photography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Won't save your life; may save your photos, 14 Jul 2004
By Peter Fenelon - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The target audience for this book seems to be the intermediate amateur digital photographer who's comfortable actually taking decent images, but who wants to get a bit of extra polish and panache into them using Photoshop Elements. I've been using digital cameras for a few years and am relatively new to Elements after a bunch of other photo album/paint programs. I felt my new camera deserved new image manipulation tools, and I wanted to get the best out of both. This book certainly helps with the image processing side of things!

Kelby doesn't bother explaining how to take pictures - his assumption is that you're OK at the "photography" bit of digital photography; his job is to explain how best to store, manipulate and enhance pictures with Elements 2.0. The approach taken isn't exhaustive; he concentrates on showing you how to get results. This isn't a dry reference; it's more a glossy cookbook!

The techniques Kelby shows for colour balancing and sharpening images in particular are way ahead of the usual "slide the sliders" approaches in beginners' books - you'll learn a lot about the use of levels and layers which will stand you in good stead for some of the later material on retouching - the emphasis here being not on gross image manipulation but the subtle tweaks that can lift an ordinary picture into a memorable one.

This is the kind of book you can read and flip through quickly (helped by a slightly whimsical but readable style, good photography and repro, and clear design) and will want to keep near your PC while you're working with Elements. Applying Kelby's techniques really does make a difference to my images; the book's paid for itself (in my opinion) after only editing a few dozen pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 15 Jan 2005
This is a easy-to-follow book, without over-simplfying the issues. It has clear screen shots and lots of practical advice. I've looked at quite a few books on Photoshop Elements, and this one is by far the best - especially if you're relatively new to the package. It really built up my confidence to try new things.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for the novice photographer, 12 Jul 2004
By A Customer
I recently bought this book, and have picked up quite a few tips to make working with PhotoShop elements quicker and easier. It simplifies the information required to enhance your photos, and illustrates each step taken. I recommend this book, there's something for every novice photographer in it
