Amazon.co.uk Review
Photoshop 7 Magic is a different kind of Photoshop book. Generally, Photoshop books teach professional or amateur technical skills or demonstrate real world commercial techniques.
Photoshop 7 Magic takes a much more creative approach demonstrating, among other things, how to get the most from
Photoshop 7's new brushes, creating still-life paintings from photographs, producing marbled backgrounds and seamless pattern tiles and "Liquid painting" with
Photoshop 7's enhanced Liquify tools. It's a book aimed very much at intermediate and advanced Photoshop users, who are experienced, technically competent and not short on creative ideas. What it has to offer is the kind of in-depth knowledge that can only come from artists who have developed and refined their own techniques in pursuit of an aesthetic ideal.
The authors have enlisted the talents of Photoshop artists and illustrators whose individual contributions provide a diverse and occassionally esoteric, but nonetheless fascinating collection of tutorials. Dorothy Simpson Krause and Sherry London's Lenticular printing tutorial provides both an insight for novices into this intriguing illusory effect as well as an authoritative guide to the process for those with more experience. Projects of more mainstream interest include Sandy Young's translucent typographic effects, Rhoda Grossman's brush techniques, Rob Barnes chapter on Web page design and Michael Bohbot's chapter on creating natural distortions and reflections using image maps.
If you're looking for a conventional guide to digital image editing, this isn't it, but you'd have a hard job finding a better source than Photoshop 7 Magic for fine art Photoshop techniques. --Ken McMahon
