Amazon.co.uk Review

Some people make their living with a camera, and for these people the maturation of digital photo technology means a significant shift in their trade. The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers is for people who are already adept with a camera, and pretty much up to speed on the peculiarities of digital photography, too. The book teaches these people how to use Adobe Photoshop, the standard photo-editing software package. More accurately, the book explains how to use Photoshop for the kinds of work professional photographers do.

Case in point: the removal from photographs of what are politely called skin blemishes. Author Scott Kelby (the editor of Photoshop User offers two strategies: one you can use to remove all traces of a mark but which requires a fair amount of time, and another procedure that delivers "pretty good" results and which can be done on many pictures (such as a set of class portraits) rapidly. Kelby teaches by means of heavily illustrated procedures, each between five and 20 steps long and spanning several pages. A good way to use this book is by scanning the table of contents for a procedure that interests you (say, "Fixing Underexposed Photos", or "Pro Wrinkle Removal"). This will enable you to spot Photoshop techniques you hadn't considered. --David Wall

Topics covered: how to use Adobe Photoshop if, for you, the program is one tool out of many in a photographic kit. Tricks teach you how to recolour hair, whiten teeth and eyes, modify unflattering body contours, dodge and burn, apply filters for effect, assemble panoramas, and do a score of other slick photo jobs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily excellent, 23 Sep 2003
When you are done with the "this is how Photoshop works"-books, this is the book for you.

Being more proefficient user of Photoshop than the average digital camera owner, though far from professional, I can say that the book really opened my eyes to some fantastic techniques for improving my photos. Even better, they are easy to use as well. Very down-to-earth descriptions on how to apply the techniques in specific yet diverse areas of digital photography (look at ToC). I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes his/her computer and don't mind the opportunity to save shots that are deemed hopeless, realize the potential in seemingly "bad" photos or take initially good photos an even higher level.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of its kind, 27 Oct 2003

I have tried a wide range of Photoshop books, but this is by far the best for photographers. Entertainingly written, it focuses on the practical and leaves the theory to one side without treating you as a half-wit. It gives you results fast, puts you on the right track for further experiments and covers in one book what specialist magazines spread out over several years! Buy it - you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book, 1 Mar 2004
By R Thomas (Bedfordshire) - See all my reviews
If you're a digital photographer and use Photoshop BUY THIS BOOK. I have wasted who knows how much on various Photoshop technique books with huge disappointment when reading them, not so with this book, the first two chapters justify the price. He explains in very easy to follow steps exactly how to do various every day adjustments to your commom photo problems. I have been using Photoshop for seven years as a semi-pro, yet I've learnt a huge amount within the first few chapters. You will not be disappointed with this book.
