Amazon.co.uk Review
Photoshop Photo Retouching Secrets is a recipe book of Photoshop techniques for people who like their food, but don't want to spend too much time in the kitchen. Forget risotto with lemon thyme, sliced prosciutto, pecorino and crumbled goat's cheese. This is egg and chips, beans on toast and rice pudding straight from the tin.
In other words, like his other well known book Photoshop 6 Down and Dirty Tricks, Scott Kelby concentrates on showing you how to get results quickly without going into detail about theory or expanding on the techniques involved. Want to know how to repair scratched and torn photos, get rid of red-eye or correct badly exposed snaps? This book shows how it's done in easy-to-follow steps each accompanied by a full-colour screenshot.
In contrast to "professional" Photoshop books, illustrated with high quality model and product shots, Scott's examples look like real people's photos, probably because they are. Each project tells you exactly what steps to follow to get the required result, and only that. You won't find chapters called "An in-depth guide to using layer effects", "Blend-modes in detail", or "Everything you wanted to know about making selections". And you're not expected to know this stuff--you don't need to. Just follow the steps and you'll get the results.
The downside to this approach is that you have to work out for yourself why a particular technique works, what's actually happening when you tweak those sliders, and how to adapt a particular technique to your own images and their problems. For that kind of knowledge you need a different book (something like Deke McClelland's Photoshop 6 for Windows Bible), and a lot more time. But for a quick fix to the kind of problems that plague amateur snappers, you won't do better. --Ken McMahon
