Product Description

Product Description

The most influential web design book ever written, completely updated to cover motion graphics, broadband interactive design, and more. Since it was first published in 1995, designing web graphics has been the seminal resource for web designers to learn the basics and then the nuances of solid design for the web. Lynda Weinman has been updating the book to reflect changes in the technologies affecting web design, but dwg.4 has been largely rewritten from the ground up. Included is coverage of motion graphics made possible by the Flash phenomenon, broadband-enabled graphics issues, usability, and more. Lynda is rewriting the book so that all coverage of specific tools is focused on the essential functionality of these programs (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.) and not on version-specific attributes of the software, making the book relevant longer for more users.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to write quality webpages, 2 Oct 2003
By Mark A. Cross "Jaideco" (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been writing webpages since 1996, initially working with HTML code and more recently with Frontpage and Dreamweaver as well. Throughout this time I have never seen a book that covers the subjects of writing an effective multi-platform website as well as this. This book doesn't try to introduce you to every single HTML,CSS etc tag that exists, although it is very comprehensive, instead it shows you how to use all of the important ones effectively to produce sites that are readable, attractive, multi-platform and effective. The feature that sets DWG4 apart from other books is its very capable coverage of the aesthetics of web design such as choosing colour schemes and how elements such as text are represented differently on the various computer platforms. If you have never touched web design before, this book might not be the best one to start with, but if you plan to be doing any significant webpage design in future this book is an absolute must.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good grounding source, 5 Dec 2008
By Nick Clarkson (Middleton, Manchester) - See all my reviews

This is a supremely useful book, not necessarily in ground breaking ideas as I found that the bulk of the information in the book I either already had a good working knowledge about or had at least skirted on and much of it is common sense. But it does bring together all the basic concepts of designing web content into one place, so you don't have to root around all over your bookshelf anymore.
It gives a great overview of all aspects without getting dogged down by minutae. A nice book.

Having said that a book about design and legibility should have easier to read headings - here uppercase letters can mix with lowercase letters (DETERMInIng TILEd PaTTERn SIZES on pages 257 ...trainspotter mode here), plus the letter "a" looks horrifically like a q (and on ocassion an "o" which a friend who was reading my copy complained about). Ok I know it's "stylised" but for a book all about good design is a bit of a uh-oh point.....Aw maybe I'm griping too much!

But that aside it's well worth grabbing as an introduction to good effective content....in fact I'd say an essential guide even!
