Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
If you liked Flash 4 Magic you're going to love Flash 5 Magic: With ActionScript. But first, a health warning. This is not the book to choose if you've just decided that there might be something to this Flash thing after all and it may help your career prospects to find out a little about it. There are plenty of Flash primers out there, but this isn't one of them.

As the title suggests, the emphasis is on ActionScript, and as with other books in the Magic series, specific features and techniques are demonstrated through practical projects.

The book is targeted at Web developers who want to make more effective use of Flash and so the authors have gone to great lengths to ensure that the projects are "real and relevant". Six core categories are identified--online entertainment and streaming video; education, games and simulations; product promotion and brand marketing; Web retailing and XML integration; freelance portfolio and rich media/animation; and external database integration. Web-site concepts are developed for each of these comprising a number of individual projects.

Education, games and simulations, for example is FishStik Educational Software. In developing Flash content for the FishStik site, you cover among other things "Working with Arrays", "Handling Keyboard input", "Programming with Trigonometry" and "Programming the Collision Detection of Multiple Projectiles". As you may have guessed, you also end up with some rather good Flash games.

If you went from beginning to end, there's very little about the practical application of ActionScript you wouldn't know. More likely you'll dip in for help in overcoming hurdles when time's getting tight and you don't have your own answers. --Ken McMahon

Review
"This book uses hands-on-projects to show how ActionScript can be used to its best effect in a number of diverse environments, from online games to integrating a database into your website."Computer Arts - Animation Special, Issue 19

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite Dissappointing..., 29 April 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book with the anticipation that it would show me the full capabilties of Flash 5, along with a comprehensive introduction to the newly incorporated capabilities of (the improved) Actionscript. Unfortunately, this book simply shows how other people (or organisations) have designed their Flash sites, along with a detailed explanation of the design methodology and relevant scripts that they've used. If you are building a site with a similar design and capability, this book will suit your needs. Other than that, you will find that this book lacks depth and comprehensiveness.

2.0 out of 5 stars dissapointed at the lack of depth, 1 Feb 2001

Description of the various possibilities with actionscript are fine but this doesn't give you a good knowledge of the full capabilities of the language . If you wish to complete tasks similar to those described in the book it will be usefull. Whatever happened to programming books that offer an index of all commands and what they do alongside examples of code .

3.0 out of 5 stars It should have been WOW but turned out to be mmmh, 23 Jan 2001
By A Customer
The clarity of the chapters has been improved over the last version, but the actionscript concepts could still be expanded on. It may just be me, but the use of Arrays seemed just too prolific and maybe a little more background information in this topic wouldn't have gone amiss. As the first pages point out, this book was not aimed at complete beginners, nevertheless its matter of fact 'how it works' was rather too direct. It has some excellent code but what you learn from this book depends greatly on your Actionscript competence.

4.0 out of 5 stars No really, this IS actually a very good book.
This book is by no means for the beginner - you do need a good grasp of actionScript knowledge (or at least basic programming pronciples) to get anywhere. Read more
