Amazon.co.uk Review

Intended to be the only XML book you need, Inside XML covers everything from creating and defining XML documents, including document-type definitions and what you use them for, to using them in your apps as well as looking at some Web-specific implementations. Producing an XML document is only the start, you need to be able to use it in your programs and this book covers handling XML with JavaScript or with Java, using XML's document model or with SAX--the Simple API for XML--which is easier to use than parsing the entire document tree.

XML is about displaying information as well as managing it and there is a section on how to display XML in a browser with XML style sheets (CSS) or with XSL. XML transforms one type of document into another; a powerful feature Inside XML makes it easy to master.

If you want to learn how to use XML and what to do with it, this is the book for you, covering both Microsoft and non-Microsoft XML tools. It's full of detail with plenty of code samples and links to relevant Web pages and tools. A huge book, that is clearly written and well arranged, it's up-to-date enough to cover XML schemas and also looks at some of the XML standards that are starting to appear, from XLinks and XPointers to XHTML, so it will be useful for some time to come. And it finishes with a look at the Vector Markup language designed to use XML to handle graphics, and WML (best known from WAP phones). This book really does cover everything you could want to know about XML. --Penny Jannifer

Product Description

The XML explosion hardly needs any introduction-it's everywhere and there just seems to be no end to what can be done with XML. While writing to the W3C standards, and keeping up with the pace for corporate implementation, you, the programmer or web developer, will need a comprehensive guide to get you started and show you what XML and its related technologies can do. A thorough guide is imperative to success because you will need to know and understand the full scope of XML from day one in order to work with it successfully. With your time constraints and impossible project schedules, you need a comprehensive guide that fulfills your needs in one complete book. Inside XML is an anchor book that covers both the Microsoft and non-Microsoft approach to XML programming. It covers in detail the hot aspects of XML; such as, DTD's vs. XML Schemas, CSS, XSL, XSLT, Xlinks, Xpointers, XHTML, RDF, CDF, parsing XML in Perl and Java, and much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best XML book yet!, 20 Mar 2001
By Mr. D. S. Stadler (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been trying to get into XML for about a year now. The problem has been that the books I have bought have focussed upon the basics of XML without showing in a comprehensible way <i>why</i> these features exist and what problems they solve!

<i>Inside XML</i> does a better job than any of the other books now gathering dust on my bookshelf. It is not that I didn't understand DTD's, but could not see how to use them with the facilty that an expert must. I did not grok.

Unlike a programming language like Java, XML exists only within the context of other tools which can manipulate the information embedded in an XML file. Therefore any good XML book must not focus merely upon XML but show people coming from many backgrounds and viewpoints how they can use XML to solve problems.

A major problem with all previous XML books I have bought is that they focus too much on XML itself and not enough upon the marriage of technologies which doing good work in XML demands.

Inside XML occuspies a unique niche in the market for people like myself who are expert C++ programmers seeking to become experts in the new Java/J2EE/XML paradigm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great XML Book, 5 April 2001
By mitchenall (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Definitely the best XML book I've seen so far. I've looked at a number of different books but somehow none seemed to cover enough ground or have useful practical examples.

This book covers everything, and I especially like the fact that it covers the Microsoft and Non-Microsoft approaches. Also it's pretty well up to date and has useful examples through and fairly decent explanations of the various XML technologies.

Like other New Riders books I've got, this one is well presented with hardly, if any typos...it's definitely worth investing in if you really want a good XML reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars XML made simple
XML isn't a complex idea but as you would expect there is devil in the detail. I've already worked through some great online tutorials and bought the XML Spy Handbook. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but too much bloat.
This does a good job presenting XML, but contains too much extra bloat.

To begin with, skip chapter 6 and chapter 10 those belong to other books. Read more
