Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

With five new chapters devoted to the upgraded features in Adobe's image editing software (including ImageReady 2.0), Photoshop 5/5.5 Artistry incorporates all the material from the version 5 book, with new instructions on creating images for the Web.

Just like the earlier book, this full-colour guide to Photoshop caters to professionals who work with digital photographs and graphics, especially those with significant experience in both traditional photography and using Photoshop. After an opening section on basics like tools, palettes, actions and layers, the book discusses more advanced topics in digital imaging, like applying the Zone System to Photoshop, mastering calibration, colour spaces, scanning, resolutions and histograms. Hands-on tutorials show how to use selections, layers and masks for colour correction, retouching and compositing images. And there are more step-by-step examples working with calculations, patterns, filters and layer effects.

The new chapters show the differences between JPEG, GIF, and PNG compression formats and how to optimise images within Photoshop 5.5's 4-Up dialogue box. There are hands-on sessions for creating GIF animations, sliced GIFs and rollovers using ImageReady 2.0. And these chapters cover new tools that go beyond just web production, like the magic eraser and the new-type dialogue box.

Throughout, the book features text-heavy explanations accompanied by copious amounts of illustrations and screen shots. It's the sort of image-laden book where you can learn just by reading the captions (for example, using linear and non-linear history). An extensive index makes it ideal for troubleshooting, and the sample photographs included on the CD-ROM are excellent quality and well chosen to match situations that occur in professional jobs. --Angelynn Grant, amazon.com

Topics covered: Intermediate and advanced instruction on using Photoshop 5.5 and ImageReady 2.0 for creating and manipulating digital images. In particular, lessons on creating a master digital image with effective use of colour spaces, device characterisation, colour management, calibration of monitor and output devices, scanning, resolution and histograms; colour correcting, retouching and compositing using selections and layers; creating special effects using blend modes, calculations, filters and layers effects; optimising image formats for the web, creating GIF animations, sliced GIFs and rollovers. CD-ROM includes sample images in different stages used in overviews and tutorials and demo versions of applications.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful, but not worth the full price paid, 15 April 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Photoshop 5 Artistry (Paperback)
I am a college student studying multimedia. This is my second semester in photoshop, and this is the main book for the class. Sorry that this is the case. I found the book only useful in the included cd art, and since the author constantly touted Deke McClelland and his book-- I followed suit. I used Deke's Photoshop 5 book to help me learn more advanced techniques, and to clear up the vague or missing explanations in this book. Deke offered a clearer and more detailed explanation of the various possiblities in Photoshop.

If you want to really know how to use this program avoid this book--unless someone gives it to you. Go to Deke's.

I must admit the book does have some good ideas and hints. It is not a total waste of time, but really does need to have a companion book to help in its teaching/learning curve that is associated with Photoshop.

1.0 out of 5 stars To complicated!!!!!!, 4 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Photoshop 5 Artistry (Paperback)
This book is much to technical, it delves to much into the more complicated aspects of Photoshop rather then simply stating what it is that has to be done, in the various tutorial, a complete waste of $44.00, got nothing out of it, also the print is much to small, using a magnifying glass just to read . For the real die-hard Photoshop user this info could be germaine, but the average graphics designer, time is of the essence. Get simpler!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book out there for Photoshop!, 10 Aug 2000
By A Customer
I have had lots of experience with Graphics apps, both for print work of high quality, special effects and compressed web graphics. I purchased Photoshop 5.5 and soon discovered that for such a large program, a textbook was highly necessary. This book is by far the best computer app book I have ever bought. It is beautifully presented and well-written. It dishes out professional advice for many real-to-life digital image manipulation situations, and provides excellent step-by-step artwork on the included CD. With a little experience in other graphics applications, this book will take you from novice to professional in Photoshop 5/5.5

Can't wait for PhotoShop 6.0 to be released so that I can buy the latest addition of this book!
