Amazon.co.uk Review

Most Web designers learn new techniques by pulling apart work another designer has already done, so the 21 projects in Flash 4 Magic are ideal. There are 15 utilities, ranging from a guest book interface to a calculator and covering the basics--like preloading images and sounds or using timing instructions--up to working with external scripts, including JavaScript and Apache's PHP script. Once you've mastered those, try the six games. The game play is basic (ping-pong, memory games and whacking games) but the techniques involved are more complex.

Flash 4 Magic assumes you know at least the basics of Flash already but even if you don't the excellent step-by-step instructions are so clear that you'll be able to work through the projects as long as you keep the Flash manual to hand in case you need to check any basic techniques. There are plenty of relevant screen grabs to show you what you need to do at each stage and you get all the artwork and code on the CD (via an interface built in Flash), as well as a finished version of each project so you can see what they should look like and check settings for anything you don't find in the instructions. You can jump in and start building real Flash applets that look good and are useful straight away, which is the best way to learn what Flash can do and how to make it happen. If you want nifty interactivity on your Web site, this is a great way to learn how to make the most of a powerful tool. --Penny Jannifer

1.0 out of 5 stars This book builds things, but what is it really teaching you?, 6 April 2001
By A Customer
This book looked great when I first saw it. Having quite a good understanding of flash already, I thought this book would enable me to pick up a few tricks quickly and enable me to understand and build projects without having to go through the process of working it out myself. I was sadly mistaken... This book leaves a lot to be desired in the ways of teaching; It may take you step by step through building a project but doesn't explain why your doing it. This book also has a major floor - It doesn't even tell you what type of properties to give certain parts of your scripting. As most flash users will know there are two of these, String literal & expression. My reply from the book company and author on pointing out the problem was that no-one else had pointed out the problem, so as far as they were concerned 'what problem?' I finally got a reply saying I'd have to use the completed project examples to figure it out. Which explains NOTHING! and only taught me to steer away from their books in future. Any prospective buyers should think carefully about this purchase, I'd recommend you look elsewhere, there's plenty of ace flash books out there and unfortunately this isn't one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most excellent and inspiring book, 21 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I was compelled to write this review having read some of the slamming criticism that others have given it. This book does not pretend to be for the novice - if you are new to Flash go buy an Idiots guide.

This book sets out right from the start to provide you with interesting and useful examples of key Flash technologies. It doesn't pretend that you don't need action script to make a decent movie - it uses it as naturally as a duck uses water!

The examples that are given provide you with an insight into how experienced Flash gurus create their impressive web sites. And if it is this type of insight and inspiration that you are looking for then this is the book for you.

OK, so maybe the teaching style leaves a little to be desired, but hay, I'd trade that for the examples and source code any day.

If you want your hand holding all the way to this level, go buy a 2000 page Flash bible, but you'll fall asleep first. This is an exciting book - one that will captivate you and give you the courage and knowledge to give Flash and your imagination a work out!

A perfect book to take the 6 month+ user of Flash to the next level. I can't wait 'til the Flash 5 version comes out!

2.0 out of 5 stars This Book DOES NOT Teach you a thing!, 9 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Do not belive the hype surrunding this book. Its for the advanced Flash user and nothing more. This book shows you how to create projects step by step, it does not actually show you how to use Flash 4. If you are looking for a book to teach you flash, stray away from this book like the plague, however if you are fairly confident with this application already and want some inspiration, look no further.
