Delve inside the core SQL Server engine—and put that knowledge to work—with guidance from a team of well-known internals experts. Whether database developer, architect, or administrator, you’ll gain the deep knowledge you need to exploit key architectural changes—and capture the product’s full potential. Discover how SQL Server works behind the scenes, including: • What happens internally when SQL Server builds, expands, shrinks, and moves databases • How to use event tracking—from triggers to the Extended Events Engine • Why the right indexes can drastically reduce your query execution time • How to transcend normal row-size limits with new storage capabilities • How the Query Optimizer operates • Multiple techniques for troubleshooting problematic query plans • When to force SQL Server to reuse a cached query plan—or create a new one • What SQL Server checks internally when running DBCC • How to choose among five isolation levels and two concurrency models when working with multiple concurrent users

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious DBAs and developrrs will have this on their bookshelves, 13 July 2009
By Martin Bell "martinbell-mvp" (UK) - See all my reviews

If SQL Server held court, then the authors of this book would all be part of the inner sanctum. I would buy a book by any of these authors, just on their names, so finding them all in on publication is really a no-brainer.

Anyone wishing to learn more about how the SQL Server engine works, rather than just learning by rote how to do things, should read this book to gain insight into the reasons why/how you do things. As such this book is not really for absolute beginners, but if you are a quick learner you will soon be able to appreciate parts of this book. The book goes to levels often skipped over by other publications.

Despite having multiple talented authors and deep technical content I found the book to come across in a consistent and enjoyable style, anyone serious about SQL Server should have this on their bookshelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chock full of SQL Server goodness...., 28 Sep 2009
By P. Schofield (London) - See all my reviews

This is the first Internals book I've ever read, and after a couple of chapters I am finding it to be an incredible learning journey. I've read the chapters that I felt were my strongest ground, yet with almost every sentence I've learnt something new. It's certainly not for newcomers to the SQL Server scene, and it's certainly not a How To - but for anyone who wants to understand what goes on underneath the hood in SQL Server, this is it!
