5.0 out of 5 stars Windows Small Business Server 2003 - C Russell, 21 April 2004
Having performed a couple of SBS 2000 installations using HarryBerelsfords "Small Business Server 2000 Best Practices" (the book thateveryone seems to recommend for SBS 2000) as the reference guide I wasrecently asked to install SBS 2003 on a new network. I thought I hadbetter play safe and order Charlie Russells book as I was unsure how muchSBS 2003 had changed.
This book has turned out to be a very good buy. It maintains a goodbalance between being easy to read yet having enough technical detail togive you confidence if something goes wrong. I rate this book as good asor even better than Berelsfords book.
If you are looking for detailed technical information about DHCP, DNS etcthen you will probably need another book like Minasi's Mastering WindowsServer 2003. However, as an SBS administrator this will prabably beunlikely. However, the two books do compliment each other well.
Although the installation process went reasonably smoothly I found myselfconstantly dipping into the book to check out various issues, so it gotused a great deal. Plus; the book comes with a companion CD on which is anelectronic, searchable copy of the whole book. So, all in all a good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should you ? Shouldn't You, 22 April 2004

As a Novell and Linux Server specialist I have been searching for a bookthat will take me from start to finish with Microsofts latest serversoftware and this book is it. The book brings details and pieces of infoto the front that are useful. So far I am half way through the book andalready I have a testing server doing most of the things I want, runningGroup Policy, Active Directory, Roaming Profiles etc.
Not a greatread, but when has a computer book been a great read, but content andpurpose is second to none.
I fully recommend and not to expensiveeither.

3.0 out of 5 stars Provides a basic overview, but nothing more, 15 Sep 2005
I bought this book after I installed SBS 2003 premium in a non-demanding, non-operating enviroment; which gave me a week to 'play' with the server settings before I read the book.
To be honest there was nothinh in it that you can't find out by having a wonder around SBS. SBS was designed to be simple, and it is! It's all pretty self explanitory, with wizards and detailed help files. So for em the book provided a few pointers and nothing more.

However if you were installing SBS for the first time in a rushed or pressured situation, and wanted to do things 'by the book' then this perfect. Step by step guides, full instructions that would get you up and running quickly. perfect for the first time installer, or novice.

For the CD (if you get one) its a bit pointless, apart from the e-book there's not alot else! Or atleast nothing you can't find on Microsoft.com.

I was disappointed with this book. Whilst it provides a guide to installing Small business server it does not really add to the information on Microsofts web site. Read more
