5.0 out of 5 stars Visual Basic.NET Step by Step, 6 Dec 2003
By Benjamin Harrison (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The early chapters of VB Step by Step are very, very basic, and deal with setting up project folders, saving your work, etc., and provide a helpful introduction to the Visual Basic.NET interface. The bulk of the book deals with programming fundamentals and introductory tutorials; very useful for a complete novice like me, as I found the tutorials easy to follow and well structured. From knowing nothing about programming, in a short amount of time I have become quite proficient in the fundamentals of Visual Basic, simply by working through this book's first three or four chaptes at my own pace. Often the tutorials are very short, so the information can be digested in one session rather than having to sift through large amounts of text.

The latter chapters of the book cover slightly more advanced elements of the programme, though none of these are covered in any great depth (they still might serve as a good stepping stone to more complex programming). The book also comes with a CD which includes sample code and the files needed to complete the tutorials, as well as a helpful e-book, so you can read on-screen while you work.

From a complete beginner's perspective, there is little to fault about this book, but more experienced programmers should be aware that a large proportion of this book will be of no use to them; don't expect an advanced and complete reference manual. But if all you want is to gain a good foundation in Visual Basic.NET programming, this is ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a GREAT primer for a MS PRESS BOOK, 14 Mar 2002
By paul@swanmead.freeserve.co.uk (Dunstable, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is one of the best MS Press books i've ever read, it's layed out well, the examples are simple & the book really focuses your attention on getting stuck in straight away. Im normally a wrox books fan , but this was just the ticket i needed. The book however does not go into great depth but does get you up and running fast with a reasonable simple grounding - just what you need after the 14 hour shift.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good VB.NET Introductory Book, 5 Jun 2003
This is a very good book for someone who is new to Visual Basic and programming in general. The first few chapters are well written and provided a good amount of information, not too much that it becomes too tiresome. However the last chapters, most notably the chapters about ADO.NET, the OOP features of VB.NET and Internet programming aren’t very in depth. There are only a couple of good examples in the ADO section, which was quite disappointing.

Also remember that this book is for version 2003 of VB, so if you have version 2002 the files on the cd will not work, the file format is slightly different in 2003.

If you are new to VB or want a quick primer before diving into the new features of VB.NET get this book.
