4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the experienced developer, 18 Nov 2004

I write this mostly to counter the rather intolerant review from W.R.Theisinger. Surely, different books suit different audiences. Personally I got this book as an experienced Windows .net developer who needed to get to grips with ASP.Net, and understand how to design and build good quality applications. Part of this is understanding how everything works - no author will be able to give you examples to deal with every possible scenario, so you need to know some of the internals to make the right design decisions.

I've always enjoyed Mr Espositos writing and presentations, and I think if you are an experienced developer then you will find this book an excellent reference - but it's not a 'Getting Started' book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should be called "How .NET Built " not "Programming ASP.NET", 30 Jul 2004
This book tells you very little about how to programme ASP.NET applications and spends chapter upon chapter telling you things like the below quote.

"When the ProcessRequest Method is called, the HttpRuntime object starts working to serve a page to a browser. It creates a new context for the request and initializes a specialized text writer object in which the HTML code will be accumulated. A context is given by an instance of the HTTPContext class, which encapsulates all HTTP-specific information about the request. The text writer is an instance of the HttpWriter class and is the object that actually buffers text sent out through the Response Object"

This quote was choosen at random - it goes on for chapters and chapters like this. I am not a beginner, I code in PHP, Visual Basic, ASP, SQL, DHTML.

This book doesn't tell you how to programme in ASP.NET it tells you how ASP.NET is constructed and then expects you to figure out how to programme it.

Save your money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Programming Microsoft AP.Net, 4 Mar 2005
By Mark Atkinson "London Calling" (london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An excellent book for experienced developers. If you are complaining about the style of this book go back to lame products like PHP or childrens products like VB. This book covers the lot ASP.NET, User Controls, Server Controls, Web Services and Mobile controls, Web security, Deployment and configuration and state management. Its full of invaluable tips on using the inbuilt server controls. There is even a chapter on using HTTP direct (Unlike other reviewers some people are actually using this) Highly recommended, you wont need any other books unless you spend all you time writing open source and have yet to discover MSDN.
