Product Description

Product Description
Learning to program is like learning a musical instrument. It takes dedication, lots of practice, and a great teacher. This primer—created by award-winning author Charles Petzold—focuses on the fundamentals of composing code with C#, an intuitive object-oriented programming language ideal for creating solutions for Microsoft Windows and the Web. Whether you’re new to programming or new to C#, you’ll quickly build the skills you need to orchestrate your own applications in the key of C#. Discover how to: •Start simple with variables—integers and text strings •Learn the basics of user input and output •Get deeper into data types with decimals and floating point •Explore how Booleans help a program make decisions •Branch, loop, and enumerate to perform selective and repetitive tasks •Prevent your programs from crashing with structured exception handling •Assemble classes from fields, methods, and properties •Extend classes with inheritance, operators, and virtual methods •Store information in data fields •Teach your programs to play music in the key of C#

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book - good introduction, 24 Oct 2004
Generally a good book, easy for the beginner. I'd recommend trying to do as much as possible in front of the computer. Not much on using C# with ASP.NET. Book shows you how to create some standalone applications with notepad and the compiler. Move onto the Wrox book after you finsih it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Programming in the key of C# ... as a primer, 18 Jul 2007
By Mr. D. Mills - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is an outstanding introduction / Primer to the C# Language (and with comparisons to the C++) language. The Author is gentle and amusing in his expanations, yet rigorous and informative. I would very strongly recommend a route for the aspiring programmer as, (through MSPress):- M.Harlvorson - Visual Basic . NET (2003) Step by Step; Tutored me the basics and terms I'd be encountering in a higher language... Followed by this book (a gentle introduction with which you will trade off the verbosity of the Basic language for a 'lower level'(C based langauge)) :) Penultimately: "OOP with MicroSoft Visual Basic.NET and MicroSoft Visual C#.NET by Reynolds-Heartle; this gives you the fundamentals with examples of Object Orientated Programming (in both VB and C# .. in one book).. maybe then you are set for the tome of "Visual C# 2005 The Language" by "Donis Marshall" This is an extremely direct and technical information in the form of a book that I have yet to tackle after the aforementioned!
