5.0 out of 5 stars Best computer language book I have..., 11 Mar 2002
This is by far the best computer language book I own, and I have quite a few now. This book is great for intermediate level programmers that have knowledge of C,C++ or VB. The book doesn't waste hundreds of pages going on about the .Net framework or the history of programming languages like so many others do, it just leaps straight into simple to follow and understand lessons.
The book is quite large but split into lots of small chapters (32 in total) which if you ask me is the best way to organise a large book as it keeps you wanting more instead of just wondering when the chapter is going to finish. The other great thing is it provides handy tips in nice blue boxes and explains the terminology of things without assuming you are an idiot.
In summary, this is a great book that is very well written and laid out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good intro for the novice, 1 Nov 2002
By Thomas Paul (Plainview, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This book is geared for the person who is either a novice programmer or is new to object oriented programming. Anyone who is migrating from another language such as C++ or Java would be better served by choosing the Microsoft Press Core Reference book. This book takes a leisurely pace through C# and Visual Studio. Each chapter introduces a concept and then takes you through a step-by-step demonstration in Visual Studio of a program using that concept. Beyond the basics of C#, the book also covers such topics and ASP.NET, ADO.NET, and web services. It includes a brief tutorial on XML as well. The book does not cover each topic in great depth and some topics are left out (I/O, for example) but for someone with little or no experience the pace and the material covered is about perfect. Overall the book is well done. The book makes it easy for the novice to learn C#. The lessons are well designed to help the reader understand the material that was just covered. The authors' pace is perfect for a self-study course and should allow you to learn the material without much struggle. If you have experience then you will probably want to look elsewhere, perhaps to the Core Reference or the O'Reilly book. You should note that this book is very much a "hands on" book so you will need a copy of Visual Studio or Visual C#.NET to make it worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for newcomers to Visual C# .NET, 16 May 2002
By roy.nesbitt@oraksystems.co.uk (Cambridgeshire, England) - See all my reviews
As an experienced programmer new to C# and the .NET platform, I found this book an invaluable asset in getting up to speed quickly. It is an excellent introduction to C#, is very well written, with easy to follow examples. The examples in the book can be completed with Visual C# Standard, barring components and classes, the minimum requirement to create projects of this type is C# Professional (although you can copy the projects installed from the CD supplied and work from these). All in all, a good starting point and well worth the money.
