Product Description

Synopsis
Explains how to program search engine spiders, agents for Web reconnaissance, and interactive assistants that will use and interpret data, adapt to changes, and serve multiple users.

From the Author
A handbook for agent/bot developers who program in MFC
This book is intended to acquaint intermediate-to-advanced level MFC programmers with the disciplines involved in writing bots, spiders, and intelligent agents. A handbook on the subject seemed to be missing for Visual C++, which is what prompted me to write one. Because bot development requires familiarity with many technologies, reference sections are included on underlying technology areas such as Internet access, database access, and e-mail programming. Just about every chapter ends in a concrete programming example to turn the theory into practice. I've worked hard to provide a quality handbook. It isn't a rehash of someone else's documentation, as is the case with many technical books. This material was learned the hard way over the years.

I've tried to appeal to two audiences: (1) developers who want to know the nuts and bolts of how everything works and (2) developers who need to get a job done and are unconcerned with the underlying mechanics. For the former group, I've included theory and reference material. For the latter group, the C++ classes included on CD provide you with a set of ready-to-use tools for Internet access, site crawling, database I/O, and e-mail access. For both groups, the many practical code examples should be helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good explanation and source book, 22 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This is a good starter with some nice examples to elaborate on. It also gives a good grounding if you are new to the nuts and bolts of http etc. I was able to quickly use the principles laid out here to write useful, efficient agents of my own.

Also good coverage of memory management in windows programming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Future Classic, 23 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Covered everything I needed to know to write an intelligent data gathering web bot. The material is accurate, relevant and up to date while covering the subject matter to a depth that you would normally expect from a third edition text. Do my business a favour and don't buy this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars possibly good for absolute neophytes, 12 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I came to this book with a backgound as co-author of a "spider" and search engine written in Java, but with little experience programming for the Windows platform.

Although I found the book to be an excellent overview of the Microsoft technologies involved with writing a native spider for Windows, the implementation details presented turned out to be incorrect in material places like controlling fetch timeouts. (The author claims this is not possible. A bit of poking around in the

Visual C++ 6 documentation proved that this just ain't so. )

I read Blaszczak's _Professional MFC with Visual C++ 5_ at the same time, and found everything I needed to know, presented in a more concise way. I would recommend Blazczak over Pallmann for anyone with goals similar to mine.
