Product Description

Synopsis

A small child awakes to find blackened leaves falling from her bedroom ceiling, threatening to quietly overwhelm her. 'Sometimes you wake up with nothing to look forward to...' As she wanders around a world that is complex, puzzling and alienating, she is overtaken by a myriad of feelings. Just as it seems all hope is lost, the girl returns to her bedroom to find that a tiny red seedling has grown to fill the room with warm light. Astonishing Perth artist, Shaun Tan's latest creation, The Red Tree, is a book about feelings - feelings that can not always be simply expressed in words. It is a series of imaginary landscapes conjured up by the wizardry of Shaun Tan's masterful and miraculous art. As a kind of fable, The Red Tree seeks to remind us that just as bad feelings are inevitable, they are always tempered by hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, 3 Mar 2006
By A Customer
An illustrator friend gave me this book to read last night, I'd been having a bad couple of days and this beautiful, beautiful book made me cry and feel so much joy at the same time.

The illustration is flawless, using a variety of techniques. I simply cannot recommend this highly enough, if you or a friend of yours has been feeling really down, lost in this jungle, get this book and see that there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

This book will blow you away.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonder! Images that remain and haunt you., 10 Sep 2005

This book is incredible! The limited use of text and outstanding illustrations that are so thought-provoking, reasonate in your mind long after you have finished lingering over the pages. I, and many colleagues, have used this book in schools with young people (10 years+) and have been amazed at the issues that have been raised from the starting point of even just one picture! Any adult that has since viewed the book has also been full of awe and wonder at the depth of the illustrations. This book is a must for anyone who thinks that picture books are only for the young, beginning readers!

4.0 out of 5 stars The best picture book you are likely to find, 14 Mar 2007

This review is from: The Red Tree (Paperback)
This is the most wonderful picture book I have ever encountered. The story is such a simple one, suitable for almost any age and each of the pictures is a work of art, composed with such care and creativity that they work completely independently of the story itself. If they were paintings, i would hang them in every room of my house. This is a book which is not ashamed to be what it is: it does not hide behind cuddly animals or a fantastical plot but is happy to be simple and concise. Sometimes life sucks, but that doesn't mean that all your dreams wont ultimately come true. I have bought this book for so many birthdays and Christmas's that I am running out of people to give it to!
