5.0 out of 5 stars Just like a fantasy novel should be, 9 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mage Heart (Hardcover)
I'm a hard-boiled and critical reader - consuming over 1000 books every year - and fantasy is my favourite genre. It happens only rarely that a book takes my breath away. This one did. Once I started, I was hooked. I read non-stop, in the bus, in the kitchen stirring the soup, even sitting on the loo. I just could not put it down. The setting is richly woven fantasy/historical material. The story is about a young, extremely gifted but inexperienced woman mage whose first professional magician's job is to an aristocrat's mistress. Her opponent his a demon. Characterisation, writing style, pace, dialogue, all are great, but the greatest compliment is deserved by the structure of the storyline. It leads to a climax so imaginative, so full of horrors, temptations, human courage and battle forces that it could serve as an ideal example for book endings. I found just one weakness - it was too predictable that the woman who befriended the lonely young mage was going to betray her. But this is a minor flaw. The book left me breathless. I could not wait to read the sequels and bought them both. They are good books too, by the way, but do not quite come up to the sheer power of Mage Heart.
