"Hennessey and Yellich, as always, are a joy to watch in action" Booklist

Product Description

Yet again, floods have played havoc with the Yorkshire countryside and when one river changes its course, a corpse comes to light. When DCI George Hennessey and DC Yellich get to it they discover that its head has been severed from the body. Well, there could be a whole load of reasons for that. But as the case progresses, there doesn't seem to be a good reason for it at all. Steeped in the history, manners and countryside of the North of England, this is an investigation that leads from dental records to a reading group and from DNA to losing the appetite for a pub lunch. It is an unbelievably strange tale that Peter Turnbull tells unnervingly believably.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plot gripping, style tiresome, 2 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: After the Flood (Hardcover)
As always with Turnbull the plot of After the Flood is gripping, with several twists and turns that make you keep on reading. Although to me the guilty party was rather obvious from an early stage. However as is increasingly happening with Turnbull's recent books the style of this one is so tiresome as to detract from the plot. Turnbull's dialogue is awful, quite unconvincing, his characters are mutually indistinguishable - mainly because they all talk in the same unconvincing way - and the descriptions are wordy. We also get far too much in this title of his favourite little set-pieces (Hennessey and Yellich at home, mainly). And Severn House does him a disservice with its editing, which is slipshod - too many typos and continuity errors. Not one of Turnbull's best, but if you enjoy his 'York' novels then you will enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars The mixture as before - plot good, style painful, 30 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: After the Flood (Hardcover)
Very much the mixture as before - good plot that keeps you reading with a few satisfying twists to stop it being TOO predictable, though as usual the guilty party is signposted a mile off. Drawbacks are Turnbull's over-wordy style (his dialogue is particularly painful to read - NOBODY talks like that!), his verbal tics ('confess' which he has been stuck on for years and a new one - 'really? yes, really' - which he uses with tiresome regularity) and worst of all his little set-pieces about each character (Hennessey's brother and wife's deaths, Yellich's son, Hennessey's affair with Louise) which he repeats almost without variation in every single book. However I do keep on reading his stuff nonetheless.. I am not surprised the York series hasn't gone into paperback, unlike his Glasgow books - the York ones, including this one, lack the vibrancy of the Glasgow ones.
